We know that when it comes to choosing a baby name, parents rarely ever go into that decision without careful thought. We know it’s a big deal, and we want to make a good decision that’s not going to haunt their kids forever.
And yet sometimes, despite it all, we continue to hear new baby names that leave us very confused.
There’s one name that has captured the attention of people on Reddit who have coined the unique name as the “ugliest name” ever and are questioning the parents who chose the unconventional option.
In the NameNerdCirclej–k community on Reddit, someone shared a collection of strange baby names they’ve recently come across.
There were some pretty interesting names.
“Mega post of every questionable name I’ve found on Instagram over the last few weeks!” the Reddit user shared in the post.
“Lots of repeat offenders, most notably several Wrenleigh/Wrenley/Wrenlees (even two Wrenley Jameses) and Collins for girls,” the poster continued.
“Also lots of surnames/professions/traditionally more masculine names for girls. Every comment on the triplet post is people trying to figure out which one is the boy.”
The Redditor said there were some names that were 'straight up mean.'
Some names included in the post were Collins Cooper, Leo Lavann, Maguire Kate, and Murphie Rose.
These are all variations of names with interesting combinations and ignoring typical gendered names.
But there was one that stood out because it's not a name but a word.
Among the photos of unique baby monikers, one featured a gorgeous custom sweater with a baby’s name on it — Dredge.
In the Reddit post, people were baffled by this name.
"DREDGE oh my days," one person responded.
"I want my child to be named in honor of filthy mud scooping machinery," joked someone else.
"Did I really just read Dredge? Like someone legit named a baby Dredge?" another commenter questioned.
"Dredge?!?! Like the machine that scoops mud out of a river?" wrote someone else.
"That is the ugliest name I’ve ever heard anywhere and those parents must hate that baby," another person shared.
"This is my son, Dredge. And his baby sister, Sludge," judged another Redditor.
"It just makes me think of sludge, and what they do to find dead drowned bodies," wrote someone else. "That poor child. It’s actually an awful name."
The original name sweater photo was shared on Instagram in April.
The sweater is absolutely stunning, and it’s such a cute idea to have a custom sweater made, but people were confused on that post too about why someone would name their kid Dredge.
"Dredge? As in the police dredged the reservoir for a body? Poor kid," wrote one person.
"Dredge????????? Like you dredge a chicken cutlet in egg wash?" shared someone else.
"Dredge…that’s different," posted another commenter.
"Imagine calling your kid dredge," shared another Instagram user.
We know to each their own when it comes to baby names, but we can't deny this is an interesting choice.
