With Halloween just around the corner, my two little ghouls are already buzzing with excitement — and so am I! There’s nothing quite like cozying up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn (and maybe a few hundred of those mini candy bars we’ve been hoarding) for a spooky, silly, and sometimes even sweet movie night. But with so many options out there, it can be tough to pick the perfect flick that’ll delight everyone without giving the younger ones nightmares. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I’ve put together a list of our family’s favorite Halloween movies that are sure to get everyone in the spirit without too many frights.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
This is a non-negotiable Halloween classic in our house! Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a trio of resurrected witch sisters trying to steal the souls of children? It’s pure, campy gold. It’s got just enough spooky elements to feel like Halloween, but it’s mostly laughs and musical numbers. Perfect for kids (and adults who remember it from their own childhoods!). I love you, Thackary Binx, now and always.
Casper (1995)
Who doesn’t love the friendly ghost? This movie beautifully blends humor, heart, and a touch of the supernatural. My girls adore the story of Casper trying to find a friend and the quirky relationship he develops with Kat and her ghost-therapist dad. It’s a sweet story about friendship and belonging that’s perfect for a calmer Halloween watch. Also, a great gateway drug, as far as Devon Sawa performances are concerned.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Is it a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Why not both! Tim Burton’s stop-motion masterpiece is visually stunning, telling the tale of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, who discovers Christmas Town. The songs are iconic, and the blend of spooky aesthetics with festive cheer makes it a unique and beloved choice for the season.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
This animated gem is fantastic for younger kids. Dracula running a resort for monsters where humans are forbidden? Hilarious! The voice cast is incredible and the humor is genuinely funny for all ages. It’s a fast-paced, colorful, and fun adventure that celebrates differences and family.
Halloweentown (1998)
A Disney Channel Original Movie that has truly stood the test of time! When Marnie discovers she’s a witch and follows her grandmother (the legendary Debbie Reynolds!) to Halloweentown, a magical place where monsters and supernatural beings live in harmony, it’s pure enchantment. It’s got a great message about embracing who you are and a wonderful sense of magic.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
While not strictly a Halloween movie, it’s filled with monsters, and that’s close enough for us! Sulley and Mike Wazowski’s adventure in the monster world, and their accidental friendship with the human child Boo, is heartwarming, funny, and incredibly creative. It’s a delightful choice that reminds us that not all monsters are scary.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Okay, hear me out! E.T. might not be about ghosts or witches, but that iconic scene of E.T. dressed as a ghost for Halloween is reason enough to include it. Plus, it’s a timeless story of friendship and wonder that perfectly captures the autumnal, magical essence of Halloween.
Ghostbusters (1984)
Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters! This classic is filled with laughs, iconic lines, and some fantastic (though slightly dated) special effects. While there are some genuinely spooky moments, the humor and the unforgettable characters make it a thrilling and enjoyable ride for older kids and nostalgic parents. Just be prepared for “I ain’t afraid of no ghost!” to be sung repeatedly after.
