What to Know
As a celebrity chef, it’s probably safe to assume that Guy Fieri is usually on duty when it comes to his family’s Thanksgiving celebration, but this year is going to look a little different for the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives star.
In a new interview, Guy revealed that he recently suffered an injury on set that left him in a wheelchair, and it sounds like it could be months before he’s fully recovered and getting around the way he once did. This sounds so scary!
Guy was rushed to the hospital after slipping down stairs.
While talking to Fox News Digital this week, Guy said he was working on set when he “slipped down a set of steps and one foot went forward and the other foot got caught on the threshold.”
“I looked like I was probably doing the splits, but when my right leg compressed into itself the giveaway point and the doctor said he’s never seen — you know, in 20 years — he hasn’t seen a tear in the biggest, thickest part of your quad in half,” he explained. “Yeah, it sucked.”
The fall required him to go into surgery so that his muscles wouldn’t “recede.”
He was filming his new show at the time.
He said that his fall put a “damper” on the filming of his new show, Flavor Town Food Fight, especially since so many people had come together for the filming.
“So, right in the middle of filming that and we’ve got everybody in town and all the chefs there and 125 people on set — and everybody’s ready to go — and I’m in surgery,” he said. “So, we figured out how to pivot through it and to have some creative filming techniques.”
Now, he’s in a wheelchair while he recovers, and he’s supposed to stay off his feet for eight weeks, so cooking a big meal for his family is out of the question this Thanksgiving.
His sons are taking over Thanksgiving for him.
The good news? Guy’s three sons are well prepared to take over for their dad this year.
“My son, Ryder, texted me from school and he said, ‘Well, I guess all the training you’ve given me and all the cooking I’ve been doing while I was at school, it was going to be my time to shine.’ And I said, ‘I am so happy you’re asking me about this versus me telling you you have to do it,'” he said.
This Thanksgiving, Guy’s job will be “quarterbacking from the wheelchair” while sons Hunter, Ryder, and Jules prepare a feast for 40.
He has a long road to recovery ahead.
His recovery won’t just include eight weeks of staying off his feet — he’ll also have to do rehab to get himself back to walking and standing the way he could before he tore his quad.
Here’s hoping he feels better soon, and that his sons do him proud on Thanksgiving. We’re going to need pictures of the food for sure!
