ICE’s Recruitment Post Days After Renee Nicole Good’s Killing Draws Serious Criticism

Just days after Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by ICE agents while in her car on a street in Minneapolis, ICE released a recruitment video on X (for early Twitter) that was in bad taste. The account quickly deleted it, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has its own ICE and military recruitment video on X that has remained up. Like the now-deleted ICE video, the DHS one has garnered lots of criticism from those who have followed the story about Good.

According to numerous news outlets, including a minute-by-minute explanation from ABC News, Good was shot by an ICE agent when she parked her car in a street during what appeared to be an ICE raid in Minneapolis. When she turned her tires away from the agent, she was seen as a threat, and the ICE agent fired multiple bullets into her windshield. Then, per the outlet and videos that were posted on social media, ICE agents prevented a physician in the crowd from approaching Good in her car. Now, the recruitment videos that came out days after Good’s death and remained on social media have impacted many.

People call out ICE and Homeland Security for “killing mothers.”

The video is clearly a recruitment ad for ICE and military soldiers. It has Lorde’s version of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” playing in the background, though it’s unclear if the DHS got permission to use that song for the video on X. The video is accompanied by a Bible passage: “‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.’ – Matthew 5:9” and there are more references to religion in the video. I guess separating church and state is out of the question for the foreseeable future.

Whatever the purpose of the video is, though recruitment seems to be the main thing here, the timing couldn’t be worse. Judging by other posts on the DHS account on X and the ICE account on the social media platform, though, there isn’t really a concern of saving face when it comes to Good and her death.

After the DHS shared the recruitment video just days after Good’s death, people were quick to leave comments under the X post. Most admonished the DHS for being so tact-less, while others straight up called out the Trump Administration for its role in promoting hate and violence during Donald Trump’s second term.

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” one user commented, quoting the DHS post. They added, “shoots mother in the face.”

Someone else wrote, “Nazis used Christmanity to justify their atrocities. Using Christianity in vain. You people are f–king pathetic.”

“What does this quote have to do with murderers harassing unarmed civilians?” Another user asked under the DHS post.

Of course, they didn’t receive a response, but they aren’t alone in being nearly speechless at the idea of the DHS posting a video promoting ICE after an unarmed woman was shot and killed by one of the agents.

“Pretty sure God doesn’t want anybody to shoot a 37-year-old soccer mom in the face three times for moving her car slowly,” another user responded to the post. “And for anyone coming for me, nobody deserves to be surrounded for no reason and shot in their own vehicle. ICE created that murder.”
