Kaley Cuoco Explains Why She & Fiancé Tom Pelphrey Got a ‘Sleep Divorce’

After nearly four years of dating, Kaley Cuoco is sharing the unconventional way that she and fiancé Tom Pelphrey keep the peace in their marriage. She was against the idea at first, but after they started sleeping separately as a way to solve the problems caused by their very different sleep schedules, Kaley called it a “game changer” during her appearance on Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast this week.

The conversation started when their bed began to get a bit crowded.

As Kaley explained on the podcast, since she and Tom share a 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, and multiple dogs, the bed tends to fill up pretty quickly at night!

“He was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ And I’m like, ‘I understand,'” she said. “So he started sleeping in the guest room.”

Though Kaley wasn’t the biggest fan of the idea at first, after Tom brought it up during one of the couple’s therapy sessions, she had a change of heart. “At first, I’m like, ‘What will people think?’ And he’s like, ‘I never see you at night,'” she said. “I don’t see him. It’s not our sexy time. We don’t cuddle. We don’t see each other at night. He goes, ‘Why do you care?’ And I sat there, and I went, ‘God, I don’t care.’ And he goes, ‘Let’s try it.'”

Kaley calls it the “best decision we ever made.”

Now that she and Tom have settled into their routine, Kaley called it a “game changer” for them both — especially since it gives them more freedom to go to bed and to wake up on their own schedules.

“He writes at night. He reads, It’s his quiet time,” she said. “So he’s up late and wakes up late on a non-working day. We established this from day one. I go to bed early, and I wake up early. We’re totally on different sleeping schedules.”

Sleep divorces aren’t all that uncommon.

According to the Sleep Foundation, romantic couples sleeping separately is more common than you might think — in fact, a third of couples have admitted to sleeping in different beds at least most of the time, if not every night.

Not only can this come with benefits like a better quality of sleep and less interruptions during the night, but it can also lead to a positive impact on your relationship (and that’s probably even more true if your partner happens to snore like a freight train).

It won’t work for everyone, but if Tom and Kaley are benefiting from it, why not?
