Men and women who dedicate their lives to working in schools aren’t there for the glory and the money. They usually want to help children. Whether they teach, counsel, or even serve lunches in the cafeteria, these dedicated school employees have a hand in molding the future, and we are lucky to have them. Because they see these kids daily, they get to know them and their stories. Sometimes, those observations can save a life.
A Florida guidance counselor noticed a little girl at school with injuries that concerned them and spoke to the child. The brave little child shared a story of horrific abuse at the hands of her stepmother, who now faces charges.
The child had serious injuries.
The counselor, who works at an undisclosed elementary school, spoke with the child who reportedly had multiple visible injuries, according to court documents obtained by WPLG. The counselor contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, which noted the second grade student came to school with “two black eyes, a large contusion on her forehead, dried blood coming from her ears, and multiple scratches on her arms and neck.” The child accused her stepmother, 42-year-old Melirose Joncky, of severe physical abuse that left her battered and in a cast.
The little girl told a heart-wrenching story.
The child told investigators that Joncky pushed her on April 8, 2026, and pulled her by her feet while she was face down on the ground. She said the woman then walked and jumped on her back, causing serious pain. Joncky reportedly pulled the child’s head up and slammed it on the ground, causing a large abrasion on her forehead, WPLG reported. The child said the marks on her body came from the phone chargers Joncky had apparently hit her with.
The story only got more horrific.
Joncky reportedly kept the torture up by forcing the child to ingest an entire bottle of hot sauce or a mouthful of salt. The child alleged her stepmother “choked her to the point she was unable to breathe” and “has used a kitchen knife and a pot to hit her on her head,” according to court documents. She also alleged Joncky would “scratch her” near her pubic area and pour hot sauce on her wounds.
According to police, they took the child to Coral Springs Medical Center and later Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Doctors confirmed fractures to her ribs, arms, feet, and abrasions all over her body, including near her genitals.
Joncky‘s attorney said she’s innocent.
Per WPLG, Joncky appeared in Broward County Court on April 10. The stepmother reportedly “admitted to the detective that she was aware of all the injuries the victim was suffering when she dropped her off.” Yet, she pleaded not guilty. Her attorney wanted her released from jail “so that she can fight this case from the outside.”
The judge was apparently uninterested in what Joncky and her attorney wanted and ordered her to be held without bail. She faces charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect.
“I’ve never read anything like this,” the judge stated. “Based upon what’s alleged in [the report], I’ve got serious concerns for the safety of the victim.”
Somehow, this little girl not only survived, but she also had the courage to tell the truth to someone she trusted at school. That counselor is doing just what they should. We hope the district understands just how lucky they are.
