After having a child, I can fully admit I became paranoid. It genuinely felt like danger lurked around every corner. And honestly? In many ways that’s not even an exaggeration. There is so much you don’t even casually worry about before you have a child, but once you do, you can’t “unsee” any of it. For instance, I didn’t think twice about my blinds being a pull string until a toddler was running around and able to tangle himself up in said string. I didn’t fathom that grapes could be a choking hazard until my son was facing solid foods, and I never truly and deeply thought about how dangerous even the folks on our own street could be.
In Florida, a 17-year-old girl was reported missing.
According to a statement posted to social media by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old runaway was reported missing on April 13, 2026. By the next day, authorities had traced her to a local sex offender’s home. We Got This Covered reported that police arrived at the home of Alexis Diaz-Toledo, 30, who was convicted in 2014 of lewd and lascivious battery involving a minor. Originally, Diaz-Toledo refused to allow the police to enter his home and told them he had not seen the missing minor in several days.
Detectives returned to his home after deducing he had violated his sex offender registration requirements by failing to report he had two vehicles. After conducting a search, investigators found the teen in his bedroom closet.
How the teen and the sex offender are connected has yet to be revealed.
Luckily, the teen was returned home safely. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told Fox News Digital that regardless of their “backstory,” Diaz-Toledo’s contact with the minor correctly prompted concerns among authorities.
“A 30-year old male sex offender is not the kind of person you want giving a 17-year old girl a place to stay,” Judd said. “I can assure you that Alexis Diaz-Toledo did not have the missing juvenile’s best interests in mind. Suffice to say, we gave Alexis a place to stay for a while — at the Polk County Jail.”
Diaz-Toledo was hit with several charges, including two counts of failure to comply with his sex offender registration requirements. He also incurred one count each of interfering with custody of a minor, sheltering a minor without notifying a parent and providing false information to law enforcement during a missing person investigation, per Fox News Digital. He is being held without bond.
If you’ve never done it before, looking up your area’s sex offender list is an unnerving experience.
You may well be very surprised to learn how close your house is to where sex offenders live, out in the world, free among the people. According to the National Sex Offender Public Website, there are approximately 850,000 registered sex offenders in the United States.
On the website, you can search by name, state, ZIP code, or a specific address (and radius) and suddenly your own street won’t even feel as safe. But regardless, it is helpful for parents to have even a loose lay of the land so they can teach kids to steer clear of certain blocks in the neighborhood.
