What to Know
Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness is opening up about a heartbreaking situation that just happened in his family, and people have a lot of opinions about it. JVN took to Instagram to explain that they are rehoming their dog, George, after a fight between their pets resulted in a broken jaw for their cat, Liza. It obviously wasn’t an easy choice for Jonathan and his husband, Mark Peacock, to make, but not everyone is convinced that he did the right thing.
Jonathan shared the whole story in a lengthy video on Instagram.
They explained that a “devastating event” happened between their pets that left one of them hospitalized and the other looking for a new forever home.
“Three weeks ago, I think it was June 2nd, our beloved dog George had a situation with Liza where they were trying to cross each other on the stairs,” Jonathan explained. “Liza was pissed and she gave him a little swat but George freaked out and went for her.”
By the time they made it to Liza, they could immediately tell that her jaw was broken, and the damage was so bad that at first, they “didn’t think she was gonna make it.”
Fortunately, Liza pulled through, but George is now looking for a new home.
Jonathan and Mark were quickly able to make it to the animal hospital, where they said the veterinarians were able to perform a “miracle” and save Liza’s life. But that meant that they also made the tough decision to rehome George, even though this was the first time in four years that an incident like this has happened.
Calling the decision “gut-wrenching,” Jonathan added, “Our theory on George is that he is not a three dogs, five cats sort of dog and he just needs to be the only dog in the house.”
Not everyone agrees with Jonathan’s decision.
While many of the comments on Jonathan’s post were offering support, others questioned the whether rehoming George was the right choice.
One person wrote, “Why not rehome the cat who was the agitator? If the dog doesn’t have a pattern of aggression.”
“Because he had shown an unpredictable pattern of aggression,” Jonathan replied. “The first two times little nips w one of our cats & dogs, this was the 3rd time.”
Jonathan certainly could have chosen to rehome Liza instead, but their household also includes four other cats. If George needs to be in a home without any cats at all after this incident, that would have meant finding a new place for five animals to live instead of just one.
Either way, this must have felt like such an impossible decision for Jonathan and Mark to make. But it seems like George is in good hands at Muddy Paws Rescue, and it’s good to hear that Liza is on the road to recovery.
