Angela Caprioli traveled from her home in Maine to Laguna Beach, California, to visit her son Safford James Wolfson. What could have been a happy trip filled with memories for the 61-year-old mother wound up being her last.
On July 20, 2026, Wolfson’s grandmother reportedly found a bloody scene at a home on Dunning Drive in Rim Rock Canyon. Caprioli was dead, and Wolfson, 36, had severe injuries. He now faces charges in his mother’s gruesome bludgeoning death.
The woman found the pair around 11 a.m.
According to a news release from District Attorney Todd Spitzer’s office, police arrived at the residence just after 11 a.m. following the grandmother’s discovery. She reportedly found broken furniture and both Caprioli and Wolfson covered in blood. Investigators immediately took over and pronounced Caprioli dead at the scene. Emergency responders rushed Wolfson to a hospital with self-inflicted injuries to his neck.
“It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life,” Spitzer shared. “We will continue to pursue justice for Ms. Caprioli and everyone who loved her.”
Neighbors claim Wolfson moved in a few months back.
Neighbors shared a bit of insight with CBS LA following the horrific crime. They claimed Wolfson moved in about six months before his mother’s death and kept to himself.
“He was pretty mysterious. He wasn’t talking to us, you know, he would come outside, smoke a cigarette and play some guitar,” neighbor Dustin Petit said. “That’s kinda the extent of the relationship we’ve had with him over the last six months or so.”
Wolfson and his mother reportedly shared a business venture.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Wolfson founded Kevin’s House, a sober living and assisted adult daycare facility with his mother in September 2021.
“It offers a breathtaking city view of Downtown Los Angeles, a canine companion and cutting edge musical equipment. We offer medication assistance and transport for those who are struggling with social interaction and the key mental health difficulties in todays chaotic world. We offer a large range of options including a peer support specialist, who visits the estate three times a week and specializes in peer support and trauma therapy,” he wrote.
Wolfson identified himself as the business manager and administrative assistant. He claimed he was working to become a board-certified peer support specialist.
Caprioli’s Facebook page confirms her involvement with the business.
Wolfson may have been experiencing physical or mental health issues.
Petit told CBS LA Wolfson allegedly had 24-hour caretakers, but appeared to be able bodied. The story concerned many residents who’ve wondered if they’ve seen Wolfson before.
“I could be wrong but Im pretty sure thats the street i drove into whe I followed that one guy who kept snooping around the kids he when I caught up to him he was talking to someone who seemed to be staying there but that happened a more than a year ago although he seems to be around every now and then,” one person shared on Instagram.
Police arrested Wolfson, and prosecutors charged him with murder and a felony enhancement for personally using a deadly weapon. He’s currently in jail on a $1 million bond and will appear in court on October 1, 2026. He faces life in prison if convicted.
