There are a lot of things we'd rather not talk about, even if the conversation is necessary. When it comes to marriage, prenups are one of those uncomfortable conversations — especially if a lot of money is at stake. Being realistic about the possibility of a marriage ending even as you go into it is necessary in certain situations, especially when we're talking about celebrity marriages. Sometimes, drawing up a legal document to protect everyone involved is what's best.
That doesn't mean it's not awkward to talk about, but fortunately, plenty of stars — from Khloé Kardashian to Scheana Shay — have been willing to discuss the details. And then there are the stars who didn't get prenups and wish they did. That's a totally different conversation.
Read on for celebrities who were willing to get real about their prenups in a very public way.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are still married, but if anything ever happened, the actress believed it was important for them both to be protected.
"I think prenups are brilliant. If I were marrying someone of lesser fortune who was 25 years younger, I'd be doing exactly the same thing," she told Vanity Fair in 2000, via the New York Post. "Why should Michael be in a position where half of his fortune, which he's worked bloody hard for, should land in someone else's lap? It wasn't a nasty experience for me. It was like, 'Thank God that's done, let's get on with it.' It was signed and put in the bottom of a drawer, hopefully never to be seen again."
Gabrielle Union

We don't ever want to imagine a world where Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are no longer together, but she learned from her five-year marriage to Chris Howard that a prenup is essential.
"The biggest difference between this and the last marriage will be a prenup — at my insistence," she said during a 2014 appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show, joking, "The reality is, I've never seen Dwyane balance a checkbook."
Khloé Kardashian
Considering the kind of money that's at stake in a Kardashian marriage, it's no surprise that Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom had an agreement in place before they tied the knot — one that ended up coming in handy when they split.
"We have a prenup, prenups are … do you know what kind of day and age this is?" Khloé said to E! News while she and Lamar were still married. "Everybody needs a prenup! I mean, I don't care if you make $5 or $5 million, in this day and age, people are crazy — you never know. And when you have businesses together, like we do, you have to protect yourself. It doesn't mean you don't love them."
Kim Kardashian

While we're on the topic of Kardashian divorces, of course Kim had a prenup ready to go with Kris Humphries, which went into effect after their 72-day marriage came to an end.
"I don't really talk finances. My father was an attorney, and I'm a smart girl — I'd like to think so — you can do the math. I wouldn't worry about that," she said in 2011, via Reuters.
Kanye West
Yes, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West had a prenup of their own — and Kanye actually wanted it thrown out in court as their divorce proceedings continue.
In March 2022, he protested the prenup in court filings, according to Radar Online, claiming that stricter laws need to be put in place. "California premarital agreements entered on or after January 1, 2002, are presumptively invalid," Kanye's lawyer said on his behalf.
Katharine McPhee

Thanks to their 34-year age gap, Katharine McPhee and David Foster's marriage has been a bit controversial from the start, but fortunately, they know how to keep things light. In a video they shared on Instagram, David joked that Katharine was already getting 50% of his earnings, to which she replied, "It's called a prenup."
"Didn't include theatrical releases, though," David retorted.
Teresa Giudice

We now know that things didn't work out for Teresa and Joe Giudice, and in a 2020 episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey, she revealed that she included an interesting clause in their prenup.
"A week before we were getting married, Joe asked me to sign a prenup, and I just felt when you love someone, you don't do that," she said. "I didn't even read it, I just said, 'I want you to put one thing in there. If you ever cheat, the prenup is void.'"
Bethenny Frankel
Teresa isn't the only Real Housewives star who got married with a prenup. Bethenny Frankel did too when marrying ex Jason Hoppy, though originally, she didn't want to go through with it.
"I'm trusting and I just don't want to deal with this, and it was embarrassing," she confessed on her podcast, Just B, in December 2021. "The word 'prenup' was embarrassing to me. It's uncomfortable, it's awkward. A contract when you get married? It's an uncomfortable, awkward concept."
Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson didn't have a prenup in place before marrying Nick Lachey, but years after their divorce, she admitted she wished they did.
"I wish I would have signed a prenup," she said in an interview with Dr. Oz. "The funny thing is that Nick wanted me to sign a prenup, and I was so offended. I was like, 'But we're going to be together for the rest of our lives!'"
Sam Asghari
Shortly after Sam Asghari and Britney Spears got engaged, he took to Instagram to joke about their future prenup after many people, including actress Octavia Spencer, were talking about it on social media.
"Thank you to everyone who is concerned about the prenup. Of course we're getting an ironclad prenup to protect my Jeep and shoe collection in case she dumps me one day," he said in his since-expired story, via People.
Lala Kent

In a 2022 episode of Vanderpump Rules, Lala Kent revealed that she and ex Randall Emmett had a prenup in place, even though they never ended up walking down the aisle before they broke up.
"Oh, yeah. I'm all about a plan B," she said while chatting with Scheana Shay. "When things get sticky, people really show [their] true colors. I just want something that is so clear and cut and dry where it's like, 'What's yours is yours, what's mine is mine. Go away.'"
Scheana Shay
On another episode of Vanderpump Rules, fans watched Scheana Shay and fiancé Brock Davies sign their prenup, while Scheana lamented not having one in her previous marriage to Michael Shay.
"First time around when I got married, we didn't do a prenup," she said. "But there was an addiction problem and when the trust was broken, I realized this isn't a marriage I want to continue. He didn't want to get divorced and I was like, 'How about we split our bank account?' And then he agreed."
Colton Underwood
Now that former Bachelor Colton Underwood is engaged to Jordan C. Brown, he's been open about the fact that a prenup isn't on the table.
"We've already had this conversation. We're in it for the long haul," he told Andy Cohen on an episode of Watch What Happens Live. "I know you guys have opinions on prenups. We don't want to put those vibes out there."
Chrishell Stause

Chrishell Stause totally avoided talking about her prenup with ex Justin Hartley during an episode of Watch What Happens Live.
"Uh, I plead the fifth! Is this that game?" Chrishell said to host Andy Cohen. When he pushed harder for an answer, she responded, "I don't think I'm allowed to answer this question."
Ali Wong

Before her divorce from Justin Hakuta, Ali Wong joked in her comedy special Hard Knock Wife that Justin's family had been the ones to push for a prenup, even though she ultimately ended up being the breadwinner. And later, in her book Dear Girls, she wrote that it was positive for her and her career.
"I was very motivated to make my own money because I signed a document specifically outlining how much I couldn't depend on my husband," she wrote. "My father always praised 'the gift of fear,' and that prenup scared the s— out of me. In the end, being forced to sign that prenup was one of the greatest things that ever happened to me and my career."
