How Kailyn Lowry’s First Gender Reveal for Her Twins Went So Horribly Wrong

Gender reveal parties have been trendy for long enough that we've seen them go wonderfully right and horribly wrong, and not even this former Teen Mom star is immune to a major mishap. In a new video that Kailyn Lowry shared on TikTok, she explained how her gender reveal made her believe her twins would both be boys, which turned out to be wrong — and her story is so important for future twin moms to hear so they can avoid having the same thing happen to them. This is wild!

It's been a busy year for babies in Kailyn's house.

Not only did Kailyn's fifth child — a baby boy she named Rio — celebrate his first birthday this month just weeks after she confirmed that he'd been born in the first place, but there's also been some speculation that Kail has already given birth to her twins this month. Although we now know that her newest babies (her sixth and seventh children) are a boy and a girl, at first, she didn't think she was going to have a daughter at all.

The first gender reveal that Kailyn had went wrong.

In a "storytime" video she shared on TikTok, Kailyn said the first gender reveal she celebrated while pregnant with her twins revealed that she would be having two more boys when a blue smoke bomb went off.

To determine what color the smoke bombs would need to be, the person setting up the gender reveal for her went by the results of her NIPT blood test.

"We went for the blood test and they said that if they were boys, they would pick up an XY chromosome on the test. If they were two girls, it wouldn't show and so you would know both of them were girls. However, when you get the test back, if there are any chromosomes — if there is any XY, you assume that they're both boys — I assume they were both boys," she says.

The first email she got with her test results said 'boy.'

And even though it didn't say "boys" — plural — she still took it to mean that both babies were boys, even though they weren't, because with fraternal, boy-girl twins, only male chromosomes will show up on the test. If this sounds stressful and a little confusing, that's because it is — but fortunately, it wasn't long before Kail learned the truth.

Her next ultrasound surprised her.

At that point, she found out that one of the babies was likely a girl, which was confirmed at her routine anatomy scan when she was 20 weeks pregnant.

"She didn't even really confirm. She was like, 'It looks like it, but I can't 100% confirm. Then obviously, by the 20-week anatomy scan, they were like, 'OK, one is a girl,'" she says in the video. "So that's why we didn't know from the initial email and the smoke bomb and all of that. We thought that they were both boys."

So far, she hasn't shared many details on her twins.

We have yet to see any photos of the newest additions to her family online — if they have, in fact, arrived — though there are rumors that she has named the babies Iverson and Valley, which Kail hasn't confirmed.

Fingers crossed that we'll find out more about the twins soon. Her crew must be so excited to have two more babies to love and play with.
