Kailyn Lowry ‘Cried All Weekend’ When She Thought She Miscarried Son Rio at 6 Weeks

A year after the birth of her fifth child, Kailyn Lowry is opening up about her pregnancy and delivery. Kailyn surprised fans when she announced the birth of her son Rio months after he made his way into the world. Although she has posted limited photos of the toddler on social media so far, she has spoken more about him on her podcast, Barely Famous. In a recent episode, Kail and boyfriend Elijah Scott opened up about the "traumatic" experiences surrounding Rio’s conception and birth that they've never shared until now.

During Kail's first prenatal appointment, the nurse couldn't find a heartbeat.

During the episode, Kail and Elijah talked about how her pregnancy with Rio was unexpected and how she took several pregnancy tests to confirm that she was indeed pregnant. They then described her first doctor appointment.

"We went together and we were sitting in the room and you were supposed to be either six or seven weeks because of the little app she was using to track the pregnancy," Elijah explained. "The ultrasound tech came in, did the ultrasound, and didn't really say nothing. She was just quiet. And then you kept asking her and was like, 'Is there a heartbeat?'

"And she said, 'No, I can't find one,' and then that's when you cried all weekend."

She had previously convinced herself she didn't want more kids.

Kail explained that before she got pregnant with Rio, she had basically decided she was done having kids and was talking about her plan to "cut her tubes out."

"We find out we're pregnant completely unexpectedly and I felt like it was such a whiplash to go from trying to convince myself I was done having kids to boom now I'm pregnant and then hearing there was no heartbeat. It just felt like a roller coaster in such a short time," she shared.

The couple revealed that when Kailyn got pregnant with Rio, they weren’t really a couple, and they certainly hadn’t sat down and talked about their desire for children in the future. "We weren't planning a baby. We weren't prepared for a baby, like you and I never talked about it. We just didn't know each other that well, so I was like upset," she said.

Slowly, Kail began to make peace about her pregnancy loss.

"I remember having a conversation with you that was like, 'Okay, this is okay, and if we decide we want to be together and have a child later on, we can make that decision,'" she explained.

A second trip to the doctor changed everything.

Everything changed for the pair when a second appointment revealed that there was a heartbeat and that Kail was still pregnant.

"Imagine like, you weren't planning a baby, you're pregnant, can't find a heartbeat, you've grieved, you've decided that it's okay that it's gonna be fine we can decide to have babies if we want in the future, and just kidding – you're actually still pregnant and there actually is a heartbeat," she said.

Elijah had been through a lot in a short period of time, too.

"Do dads grieve when there's a loss? or were you just kind of like 'This is nature and we're gonna take what we get?' Were you relieved when I was maybe not pregnant?" Kail asked Elijah.

He shared that he didn’t really have an answer to her question. "I was just stuck. I didn't know what to feel," he admitted.
