Well, 2020 was a weird year (to say the very least), but like every other year that has come before it, we could definitely count on Kate Middleton to keep us distracted with her style. Whether she was making in-person appearances alongside Prince William or just hopping on a Zoom call to meet her royal obligations, the Duchess of Cambridge looked good this year, and she definitely kept her title as the biggest style icon in the royal family these days.
But we all know that most of us nonroyals likely couldn't afford most of Kate's wardrobe, so how did 2020 stack up? According to the Daily Mail's roundup, last year Kate wore approximately $125K in new clothes and accessories, and this happened to be one of her less expensive years in fashion. Whoa!
Read on for all of Kate's most iconic looks from 2020, along with what many of her new pieces cost (translated from pounds to US dollars, of course). We may never be able to afford some of her gorgeous dresses, but we sure can have fun drooling over them. Wonder if she'll be able to top all of these looks in 2021?
A Visit to Bradford
In January, Will and Kate made a royal appearance in Bradford, and Kate definitely dressed up for the occasion. She turned heads with this green coat from Alexander McQueen for an estimated $4,000, though the black-and-white Zara dress she wore underneath it was much more cost effective for about $122.
Her Camel-Colored Coat
Kate rounded out the mouth of January by visiting a baby sensory class in Cardiff not long after launching her early education initative. Here, she's wearing a $488 cashmere Massimo Dutti coat over a $39 skirt from Zara. She accessorized with a $1,452 personalized moon necklace from Daniella Draper.
Seeing a Musical
When Will and Kate stepped out to see Dear Evan Hansen at Noel Coward Theatre in February, she wore this sparkly Eponine London dress, which cost around $2,200. Though those Jimmy Choo pumps she wore that night were already a part of her collection, she did add a $1,000 clutch from the designer to complete her look.
Off to Ireland
Later in February, Will and Kate took a trip to Ireland, where they attended a reception at the Guinness Storehouse. Kate showed up in this seriously impressive sparkly green gown from The Vampire's Wife that cost about $2,165, along with a pair of $712 Manolo Blahnik pumps.
Commonwealth Day
March brought the royals' annual Commonwealth Day service, which just so happened to also be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's final royal engagement before moving to the US. For the occasion, Kate donned a Catherine Walker coat, Prada clutch, and Gianvito Rossi pumps that she'd already worn before, adding a matching $624 fascinator from Sally Ann Provan.
Meeting NHS Workers
Just before the lockdowns in the UK were in place later in March, Kate and Will ventured out to meet with National Health Service staff who were already beginning to meet the challenges on the health care system. For this engagement, Kate wore a $214 suit from Marks and Spencer.
Styling on Zoom
By the end of March, the royals were taking the vast majority of their engagements to Zoom, but that didn't mean Kate relaxed when it came to her fashion. Although she and Will chatted with teachers caring for children whose parents were frontline workers, Kate wore a $39 Zara sweater and $223 Catherine Zoraida earrings for the webcam.
Clapping For Carers
In April, Kate, Will, and their kids made a TV appearance at the front steps of Anmer Hall when they came outside to join the rest of the UK in clapping for health care workers. She impressed viewers by wearing this floral $175 Ghost Anouk dress that was perfect for springtime.
Launching a New Project
The video conferences continued well into May, when Kate hopped on a call to announce her #HoldStill photography project to the world. Here, she's wearing a $611 yellow floral Raey dress as she shared the details of her contest from her country home at Anmer Hall.
A Little Bingo
Later in May, Will and Kate got to take on one of their most fun Zoom meetings yet: Calling bingo for residents at the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff. Kate wore one of her least expensive looks: an LK Bennett dress and Catherine Zoraida earrings.
Visiting a Garden Center
By June, Kate and the rest of the royals were beginning to make in-person visits again, and for Kate, this meant visiting a garden center near Anmer Hall. Though her sneakers, linen shirt, and earrings were already in her closet, Kate also sported a new Fjällräven vest worth $224 and $71 Massimo Dutti skinny pants.
Florals for Spring
No other royal pulls off florals quite the way Kate does, and this bright, cheery look has definitely got to be one of her best. While visiting a children's hospital called The Nook, Kate wore this Faithfull the Brand dress, which ran her about $202, along with espadrilles and earrings we'd seen her step out in before.
Visiting a NHS Hospital
In early July, Kate joined Will for a visit to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn to speak with NHS workers. For the visit, Kate wore a Beulah London midi dress that came in around $176, but the real kicker was her Patrick Mavos milky quartz earrings, which cost an estimated $3,149.
A Royal Foundation Meeting
In late July, Kate attended a meeting at Sandringham, where she spoke with health workers as she and William launched the COVID-19 response fund. She wore a $1,308 Susannah Cotton shirt dress, and even though that's pretty expensive, she did pair it with espadrilles and earrings she already owned.
A Visit to Baby Basics
In August, Kate visited Baby Basics, an organization that helps give parents in need the supplies necessary to care for their babies. Her Susannah London dress, Tabitha Simmons pumps, and Daniella Draper necklace were all repeats, and she continued to keep this a low-cost look by only adding her $59 All the Falling Stars earrings.
Meeting With Parents
When Kate went to speak with experts and parents at Battersea Park in September, she wore the pink slacks from the Marks and Spencer suit she'd worn earlier in the year, along with an $81 Ralph Lauren top and necklaces from Spells of Love and All The Falling Stars that came in at $115 and $128, respectively.
Hanging With David Attenborough
One of the Cambridges' most memorable events from the year was their collaboration with David Attenborough, and Kate definitely dressed up for the occasion! She wore a $1,619 Gabriela Hearst dress that she accessorized with Emmy London shoes and a $237 pair of Patrick Mavros earrings.
A Casual Coat Look
For Kate's visit to the University of Derby, where she met with new college students to talk about their mental health, she wore a $352 Massimo Dutti wool coat over a cashmere sweater from the designer that cost $175. To accessorize, she wore a $162 leather belt from Anderson's.
The Early Years Survey
When Kate took to Instagram to share this video of herself talking about her Early Years survey, she also debuted a well put-together look — once again all in Massimo Dutti. The pink cashmere sweater she's wearing costs about $175, and her wool flannel blazer costs about $203.
Hitting the Red Carpet
In December, Will and Kate (along with their kids) attended a performance at London's Palladium Theater, walking the red carpet on their way in. Kate wore a $1,975 Alessandra Rich dress, accessorizing with a Ludlow Concertina crossbody bag that cost about $848.
