The first trailer for Kanye West’s upcoming documentary, In Whose Name? is here, and it looks like we’ll be getting a glimpse into what was going on behind-the-scenes when he and Kim Kardashian went their separate ways in 2021. Audio of Kim breaking down in tears as she and Ye discuss the ways he’s changed in recent years can be heard in the new footage. This could be a tough watch.
The trailer premiered on Wednesday.
As the trailer opens, Ye can be seen walking into the center of a circle made out of dozens of pairs of Yeezy sneakers — one of the items that the rapper’s fashion brand has become best known for.
”I’m off my meds for five months now,” he’s heard saying over the clip.
It includes a snippet of a tough conversation with Kim.
In the next clip, Ye is closing a door labeled with Kim’s name as she can be heard tearfully saying, “your personality was not like this a few years ago.”
Following a glimpse of him riding in the car next to a much younger North West, who was in a car seat at the time, more footage of Kim plays. “Never tell me I’m gonna wake up one day and have nothing!” Ye yells off screen as Kim calmly replies, “We can talk about that later” before Ye cuts her off.
The footage covers a lot of ground.
The trailer also shows Ye talking about how he came up with the idea for his popular Sunday Service while he was hospitalized, spliced up with more clips of Kim, their children, and Ye’s life, all leading up to his short-lived presidential run in 2020.
“I’d rather be dead than be on medication,” he says, adding, “Either they destroy me, or I destroy it.”
The documentary has been in the works for a long time.
According to Deadline, filming for In Whose Name? began more than six years ago, with filmmaker Nico Ballesteros capturing thousands of hours of footage in that time.
“The camera never blinks as Ye speaks candidly about living with bipolar disorder, offering rare insight into the realities of mental illness and its impact on identity, perception, and power,” said a synopsis of the film. “Through a personal lens, the film considers how mental health is handled — or left unspoken — among the weight of visibility and vulnerability.”
In Whose Name? premieres in theaters on September 19.
