There Are Growing Signs Meghan Markle Is Gearing Up To Enter Politics

There's never any shortage of theories about what Meghan Markle will do next, but these latest royal predictions have definitely piqued our interest. According to some insiders, the Duchess of Sussex appears to be laying the groundwork to kick off a political campaign sometime in the near future.

Meghan's been all about social change since a very young age.

One of the first things the general public learned about Meghan when the news of her relationship with Prince Harry first broke was that she once called out Proctor & Gamble over a sexist dish detergent commercial when she was a kid. A young Meghan wrote the company a letter, taking it to task for insinuating that only women wash dishes.

Meghan has recently been working with someone close to Michelle Obama.

It seems like the Duchess of Sussex may have called in the big guns by way of the former first lady's previous press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld. According to The Sun, a 2021 tax filing reveals Harry and Meghan's Archewell Foundation paid nearly $110,000 to Katie, who is now working as a public relations specialist.

The payment was flagged as "strategic support for social impact PR," leaving some to believe that Meghan is priming her image for a run for political office. The Mirror's Russell Myers suggested this exchange "gives you an indication about whether [Meghan] has political ambitions."

The mother of two has already gotten involved in some major political causes.

Who can forget when news broke in November 2021 that Meghan was cold-calling senators to lobby for paid parental leave. Meghan rang Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia and Susan Collins of Maine to push the women to vote on a package that would ensure paid parental leave for those who had just given birth.

Currently, the US has no federal parental leave policy, making it one of only three industrialized nations that don't provide this type of benefit at a federal level, according to the International Labour Organization.

Like her husband, Meghan is heavily involved in philanthropic work.

She and Prince Harry have found a lot of common ground in their own charity work, which Meghan had been passionate about long before she met the royal. But some of Meghan's pet causes are more politically and socially focused, like her work championing women's rights.

It would appear that some people think that Meghan's commitment to these types of social issues could prompt her to get involved at a higher level — maybe even within the White House.

Meghan's political aspirations were apparently well-known to the royal family.

After Harry and Meghan announced in January 2020 that they were leaving their roles as working royals to pursue other interests, there was a lot of debate about whether Meghan's plan was to run for office. But the pandemic (and another pregnancy) happened, and Meghan seemed to press pause on her political ambitions for the time being.

While we wouldn't be shocked to see Meghan make a run for office, we wouldn't bet on her making moves anytime soon. She may have much more political capital right now simply as a duchess. We have a hunch she could get a lot more done as a civilian than she ever could as a politician.
