Prince William and Kate Middleton know that they and their family are going to be photographed whenever they're in public, so they always try to look their best for the cameras. This often includes color-coordinating with their kids, because it does seem to make for a more put-together photo when dad, mom, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and little Prince Louis are all at least wearing the same shade.
They don't always coordinate when they go out in a group, but the Cambridges do match more often than not, as Vogue documented. We have a sneaking suspicion that fashionista Kate is behind the color choices, because William's style is mostly limited to black or blue suits and sometimes a colorful tie.
It'll be interesting to see if the family's style changes as the kids get older and start dressing themselves more. Will they stick to Kate's meticulous color schemes, or will they branch outside of the cool tones on the color wheel? We'll just have to wait to find out, but for now we can enjoy all the times that they have coordinated.
Baby Boy
When Kate and William showed off baby George in public for the first time, they both coordinated in baby blue tones. This shade is one of the duchess' favorites when it comes to family coordination, but it was particularly relevant for welcoming their new son.
Hospital Tradition
The baby blue coordination was repeated several years later in 2018, when William took Charlotte and George to meet their new brother, Louis. We'd like to think before leaving for the hospital that Kate laid out their outfits so they'd all be in "baby boy blue" for the cameras.
Welcome to Canada
The Canadian flag may be all white and red, but the Cambridges again went with blue outfits for their arrival during a 2016 Canadian tour with the kids. William got a little red in there on his striped tie, but mostly he wore navy to match his wife and kids in their various shades of the color.
Pretty in Pink
Kate's sister, Pippa Middleton, had a very specific color palette for her wedding that the bridal party all participated in. For the girls, it was pastel pink. Kate really committed, wearing a full pink dress with a pink hat. Charlotte gave the tone a nod in a more subtle way with a pink sash and shoes.
Blue Christmas
For their 2017 Christmas card, the whole family was once again in pastel blue. William hardly ever fully commits to a color scheme. He usually just throws on a tie in whatever color Kate chooses. The rest of the family went head-to-toe blue. We love Charlotte's little coordinated Mary Jane shoes.
Shades of Red
The whole Cambridge family wore shades of red for the 2017 Trooping the Colour. William wore his red formal outfit, George had burgundy suspenders, and both Kate and Charlotte went with a brighter, lighter pink color for their dresses. The family dresses all in blue so often, it's fun to see them switch it up.
Christening Coordination
Kate always wears cream to match her babies when they get christened, but the rest of the royal family went with blue tones for Louis' big day. Even Prince Harry in the background got in on the coordination efforts. The color does look great on them, so it's no wonder they pull it out all the time.
Lovely in Lilac
Purple is a rare choice for the Cambridge clan, but we totally loved the style switch-up for their trip to Germany. William participated in his usual way, with a dark purple tie, Kate put her kids in pale purple outfits, and she went with a breezy lilac dress herself.
Like Mother & Father
Instead of a whole family coordination attempt for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding, William and Kate split it up by gender. The girls wore white (apparently it's allowed at royal weddings to match the bride), and the boys wore black. George was absolutely over the cameras here, but we're glad a photo of this fun take on matching exists.
Birthday Blues
Prince Charles' 70th birthday was a big bash, and there were a couple of color schemes going on. Meghan and Camilla both went for cream, and everyone else did shades of blue — and Kate made sure that all of her children were wearing light blue specifically so they would match even more within the overall blue color scheme.
Casual Christmas
The Cambridge kids are used to taking formal portraits with their parents, but Kate and William mixed it up for their Christmas card in 2018. They went super casual while also still coordinating. Notice that everyone is wearing some kind of denim? Kate, William, and George have jeans, Charlotte's in a denim skirt, and Louis has jean shorts. So cute.
Matching the Queen, Too
We can't see her here, but it's worth noting that at the 2018 Trooping the Colour, the Queen wore robin's egg blue — just like Kate, George, and Charlotte did. Who got that memo first, we wonder? It made for quite springy balcony photos with everyone in various bright shades and the men with their blue sashes.
Taking After Their Parents
OK, technically it wasn't Charlotte or George's idea or decision to match for their role in Princess Eugenie's bridal party, but we love it anyway. They look so cute in their green sashes for the big day. We wonder if growing up matching all the time will make them want to do it with their own kids some day or if they'll rebel against it.
Back in Blue
It was the duchess' favorite color scheme again for a trip to Poland. William wore his usual navy suit and blue tie, while Kate went with an all-blue dress. Charlotte's outfit is blue — down to the shoes — and George wore light blue and navy combined. They're so cute together, we don't even mind that they keep recycling the same color palette.
Louis Joins the Blue Parade
Only the kids matched for the 2019 Trooping the Colour (again, in blue), but they still kind of coordinated with dad William because he had a big blue sash on. Meanwhile, Kate took a complete left turn and wore all yellow. Maybe she just wanted to stand out for once.
School Spirit
Charlotte and George's school uniform colors are navy and red, so it was hardly a surprise that Kate also dressed in those hues when she went to drop them off in 2019. Her red and navy dress was perfect for the occasion. We're sure she'll be one of those moms who buys all the college merch when her little ones go off to uni one day. She just loves to match her babies.
Classy Christmas
For their formal Christmas appearance in 2019, they pulled another Meghan Markle wedding and split the coordination by gender. Kate wore a forest green hat and heels, and Charlotte coordinated with her in a green coat. Meanwhile, William and George both wore navy blue. That's not a very Christmassy color, but William rarely expands out of the neutral tones.
Stay-at-Home Style
In spring 2020, when everyone was staying home, the Cambridges made an appearance to applaud the country's frontline workers. For the video, Kate made sure they all coordinated — in blue — again. Look, we're not tired of it, but we also welcome change any time they're ready for it. They still look great, though.
Even the Guest Matched
In September, the whole family got together with legendary nature historian Sir David Attenborough. William, Kate, and their kids were ready for the photo op in their best matching blues, and it appears even David got the memo, because he showed up in navy pants and a coordinating sports jacket.
Platinum Style
At the 2022 Trooping the Colour, amid the Queen's historic Platinum Jubilee, the Cambridges embraced a classic blue and white color palette (we're kind of getting nautical vibes, especially with Louis' adorable sailor shirt). The exception was William, who wore his red military uniform for the occasion. Sometimes duty calls (and gets in the way of a perfectly coordinated family fashion moment).
