Don’t Make Pasta Sauce When You Have Your Period … and 5 Other Odd Food Superstitions

On the season premiere of The Real Housewives of New Jersey this week, Teresa explains how traditional Italians believe women shouldn't be allowed to make a red sauce if they "have time of the month."

They think it could spoil the tomatoes.

Ridiculous, but a good excuse to get out of cooking, I guess.

Here are some other amusing food superstitions that I'd never heard before:

  1. If you're a Twilight fan and yearn for a visit from your own Edward, don't sprinkle mustard seeds on your roof. European superstition says doing so keeps vampires away.
  2. Have a fight with your best friend recently? An English superstition says spilling pepper could be the cause.
  3. I'm doomed on this one: Tipping over a piece of cake while serving it to a guest is a bad omen. Oops, I can never keep them upright!
  4. Don't break the noodles if you want to live a long life. Long noodles lead to longevity, according to Chinese superstition.
  5. Want a better relationship with your mother-in-law? Romanian superstition says you should eat the corners of bread.
