Note to homewreckers: If you are going to have an affair with someone's husband, check your state's legal codes first. In some states, including North Carolina, adulteresses can be sued for having an affair with a married man. Fantasia Barrino, I mean you!
Fantasia Barrino is a singer and actress who won American Idol in 2004. She played the lead role of Celie in Oprah Winfrey's stage production of The Color Purple, which was recently on tour around the country. She's been nominated for a Grammy eight times, and her latest album, Back to Me, hits stores August 24.
But her most recent role is that of the real life "other woman" in a tawdry love triangle, complete with juicy sex tapes.
The tapes have not been released to the public or even leaked on YouTube (yet), but are mentioned in a lawsuit brought by Paula Cook, wife of Antwuan Cook, the man having the affair with Barrino. He's tall and buff and handsome, so you can understand the 26-year-old Barrino's attraction. What I can't understand is her stupidity … or her morality or her irresponsibility … but let's start with the stupid part.
By carrying on with a married man, a father of two small children, and providing concrete evidence by producing sex tapes, she could be sued for millions. So far, Paula Cook is only suing her husband for custody of their two children, ages 6 and 2, child support, and their house. Legal experts say this is the logical first step and that a lawsuit against Barrino is likely to follow.
Which is why she should be trying to get on Paula Cook's good side, helping to make the breakup as easy as possible for the couple and the two children, perhaps even putting things on hold until he can get a divorce, and not interrupting phone conversations between her lover and his wife with vitriol like:
"He don't want you. Maybe the next time you get a husband you'll know how to keep him. That's why he is here with me."
I don't know about you, but this comment would not only cause me NOT to buy her new album, but it would have me running to my lawyer's office faster than you can say Toni Morrison.
Should all states adopt laws allowing wives to sue the woman who is having an affair with her husband?
