There are only two things in this world that have ever rendered me speechless: A drunk moose stuck in a tree, and this, a rap encouraging the citizens of Singapore to forget the normal patriotic celebrations of their Independence Day, and instead commemorate the occasion by having sex and making a baby. Singapore has one of the lowest birthrates in the world, and Mentos has decided to have fun with that fact and released an ad campaign that declares August 9 National Night, an evening when countrymen and women are encouraged to go home and get freaky. Here's a lyrical sample from the rap:
"Singapore's population, it needs some increasin', so forget waving flags, August 9th we be freaking … the birthrate won't spike itself!"
True statement. The government of the small city-state has done a lot to encourage some baby making — there are tax breaks for families with children, government paid maternity leave, and government subsidized singles' events like speed dating and dancing lessons.
I don't know if they're happy about this Mentos ad or what, but officials shoudn't be too upset — if they want more babies, this might just be the way to do it. Some are concerned that the playful sex anthem trivializes the birthrate problem, but I don't see it like that. Anything that gets people talking about the issue, any issues, is a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately, it's already August 10 over there in Singapore, so you missed your chance to celebrate National Night on SGT time, but you've still got a few hours left EST. No, you won't be doing Singapore any favors by making a non-Singapore baby, but still, it's a fun excuse to get bizzay tonight, right? After all, it's national night, come on now, let's get that baby bonu$.
