Demi Lovato isn't shy about her past struggles with drugs, alcohol, and self-harm. She's talked openly and honestly about her addictions, mental health, and eating disorders, constantly reminding her followers that self-love is a journey. Her candidness has made her a role model to so many who are battling the same problems.
So, in honor of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, here are some times Lovato's inspired all of us with her honesty about eating disorders:
"I knew it was a problem."
"I knew at a young age that some of my behaviors were a problem," she told ELLE. "When I was bulimic, I knew it was a problem. When I was anorexic, I knew it was a problem. But I wasn't in a place where I could quit by myself."
Recognizing and accepting a situation is a problem is a crucial step toward recovery.
"Recovery is possible."
The 25-year-old shared a shocking side-by-side photo to prove just that.
"So, I’m insecure about my legs in this picture. But I’m posting it because I look so happy and this year I’ve decided I’m letting go of my perfectionism and embracing freedom from self criticism."
For Lovato, ED recovery is about total self-acceptance and recognizing that flaws aren't exactly flaws.
"I'm healthier than I've ever been."
"I've maintained the meal plan put together by my trainer [Ronny Comacho], so that has been so helpful," she shared back in 2015. "As for regular exercise, I love seeing muscles rather than bone." The singer has since nixed the diet mentality, but her focus on health and muscle and fitness was only a step forward.
"Stop measuring and start living."
Lately, her Twitter feed has been filled with inspiring quotes about overcoming eating disorders, such as this one about living life to the fullest.
"Diets aren’t supposed to last forever."
She also tweeted about ending harmful diet culture.
"No more food shaming myself!!"
Lovato knows that skinny doesn't necessarily equal happy, which is why self-love rather than self-shame is always best.
"I'm on a journey to discover what it's like to be free of all demons."
Though she's come a very long way, Lovato knows ED recovery is an ongoing process — one that requires a lot of time, effort, and patience. "When I'm comfortable in my own skin, I feel confident. When I feel confident, I feel sexy. When I feel sexy, watch out!" she said in her documentary.
