I Correctly Guessed the Sex of Our Friend’s Baby & Now My Wife Won’t Speak to Me

There is no science to correctly guessing the sex of an unborn baby. Even if you think you’re right, you have to allow for a margin of error. You won’t know anything for sure until the baby is born. And even then, you could still be wrong. One man didn’t realize a gender reveal guess would cause friction in his marriage.

When prompted, the man used his statistical skills to come up with an answer. Turned out, his guess was correct. Even though he didn’t think of it as a very big deal, his wife certainly did. Apparently, she wasn’t pleased with his guess, and he couldn’t figure out what he did wrong.

The man used what seems like sound logic.

The man took his dilemma to the AITA forum on Reddit, as many do. He and his wife were invited to a gender reveal party for a friend. In his post, he explains that the mom-to-be already has two sons. But she told his wife that she was “hoping for a girl this time.”

During their car ride, the wife asked what the man thought the baby would be. “I thought the baby would be. I said that given that the sex ratio at birth is about 105 boys for every 100 girls, that my guess is that this child would be a boy,” he wrote.

However, his wife disagreed, believing that having two sons already would affect the chances of a girl. “I replied that the 2 boys were not relevant to the sex of the child our friends were expecting, and that there was still about a 51% chance this child would be a boy,” the husband explained in his post.

Things didn’t go the way his wife believed, and she wasn’t pleased.

During the gender reveal party, the couple found out they were having another son. “Although our friend tried to appear happy at the party, it was clear that she was disappointed that this child would not be a girl. My wife also appeared to be disappointed as well,” the man shared.

Things only got worse on their car ride home. The wife expressed her frustration with her husband claiming he “could have been more supportive,” and his guess “shouldn’t have been so mathematical.” When he pointed out his logical reasoning, she wasn’t interested. “She didn’t like that and stayed quiet for the rest of the drive home,” he wrote.

People were overwhelmingly on his side.

The man simply made a guess, many commenters pointed out. They couldn’t understand why his wife was so upset with him.

“Your wife wanted you to participate in magical thinking not give an honest answer. You gave a factual answer and didn’t announce it at the party or rain on anyone’s parade. You simply answered your wife’s direct question with your genuine thought process,” one person commented. “The problem isn’t your mathematics it’s that people sometimes want comfort more than truth. This isn’t on you it’s just misdirected emotion.”

Another person agreed that the husband wasn’t being a jerk and added a suggestion: “I guess your wife is just lashing out and taking out the disappointment on you? So I wouldn’t take it personally, but once a little time has passed and she can get some perspective on this, I’d revisit this with her and ask why she felt the need to take this out on you.”
