Victoria Beckham is the queen of fashion luxury. The artist formerly known as Posh Spice is a high fashion darling, and her prices prove that — she regularly designs dresses priced well over $2,000.
So for her to turn and do a collab with Target, where I could get the Victoria Beckham experience for a quarter of the price, I was thrilled. And when I heard that the ENTIRE line would be size-inclusive, with nearly all pieces available up to a size 3X — I was delighted. Everyone deserves awesome fashion.
Lauren and I decided to try everything on and see how good the Victoria x Target really is. Would we feel like Spice Girls? There was only one way to find out…
The first item we tried was this satin skirt, which felt like ~luxury~. And the flowers were as vivid in person as they were online.
Lauren ordered this skirt in a 2X, while I ordered it in a straight-size medium ($30, Target).
Lauren had mixed feelings on this one. "I loved the photo-realistic spring design, but the fit was weird."
"I'm torn on this one. The pattern is beautiful, but the silky material just didn't fall right on me. Luckily, It definitely fit, and despite it looking tight in the photos, the waistband was too loose and kept sliding up and down my hips," Lauren said.
This skirt looked TINY, and while putting it on, I was reallyyyy nervous. I was getting mentally prepared to hear something rip. But it zipped up with no problems, and I surprised myself by loving the fit.
I'm not a floral person, but this skirt was really comfortable and beautiful, and wasn't too snug once I started walking around. I also thought the flower print across the bottom was a smart way to continue the floral theme in the whole collection.
Next we tried this neon pink drop-waisted dress, and immediately began questioning our life choices.
I'm in a medium and Lauren is in a 2X. Jaquard drop-waist dress ($40, Target).
Photos don't do it justice, but this pink is SO MUCH. It was so bright that it almost overshadowed out the delicate details of the dress.
"I cannot stand the way this pink dress falls," said Lauren. "The hem and shape completely cancelled out any curves I had and I sort of felt like a Barbie flight attendant but less glamorous."
"I did like the pocket details," she added. "But I wish that they were real."
The small divet in the boat neckline would definitely make selfies more interesting — so that's something.
The color was so loud, I felt like the dress was wearing me. And the dress tragically made my butt completely disappear.
I think the drop waist would work better if 1) I didn't have hips and 2) I was taller. Since I'm neither one of those things, the waist just sat at an odd place in between my waist and hips, which made me wonder WHO Victoria Beckham was cutting this straight size dress for.
Next, we tried another dress, this time in a fun color-blocked style with scalloped detail.
The fall color scheme on this dress means that it could fit in with multiple seasons. I am, again, in a size medium and Lauren is in a 2X ($40, Target).
"I didn't hate the fit," said Lauren. "But this drop waist thing just doesn't compliment my plus-size body."
"I think on a thinner, taller girl this would be perfect. Though the details are killer and I sheepishly admit the Halloween color scheme makes me so freaking happy."
"And I DID love the scalloped neckline!"
Same.
This dress was roomy, but fit me perfectly — and that made me a little sad.
As a straight-size medium, most clothing fits me. I just wish that the silhouette would've hit at the correct place for all sizes — Lauren said the plus-size drop-waist consistently missed the mark, which is such a shame.
I also loved the color-blocking. And the scallops didn't hit too high or low on the bust, which was great.
I'm not usually an orange girl, but this dress made the case for me. I'm a convert now.
Next we tried the craziest item in Victoria Beckham's collection — a '70s printed romper.
I'm wearing the retro floral tie-waist romper in a medium and Lauren is in a 2X. ($30, Target).
Lauren found that the cut of this romper was NOT plus-size friendly. "I looked like I was wearing a child's onesie, and I had a constant, irritating wedgie the whole time it was on."
"The only upside was that this romper actually has pockets. It almost makes up for the too-busy print."
While the straight-size romper had no wedgie issues, I found the print difficult. Since I don't usually wear color, it was hard for me to really enjoy this look. But if '70s poolside chic is your jam, then this is the jumper for you.
While most rompers are pretty tight around the thigh for me and dangerously short, these were surprisingly roomy which was nice.
Lauren and I were really excited to try this dress, since it was also featured in the ad campaign. And it didn't disappoint. The satin fabric was soft, it was comfortable, and the calla lily photo print was very vivid.
I'm in a medium, Lauren is in a 2X. Calla lily dress ($35, Target).
Lauren felt that the arm holes on the plus-size dress was too big, but the flower print was nice.
"My only complaint about this dress was the arms, I felt like there were weird loose gaps. Otherwise it was a really comfortable dress that I think works for the office or a a fancy brunch."
And I thought this dress was prettyyyy. The flower hit in the right place and the drop peplum on the bottom was just the right amount of flare.
I did not have the too-big armhole problem, which means that was exclusive to the plus-size version of the dress. Not good. But I definitely would get a lot of wear out of this dress.
And the last look Lauren and I tried on DELIVERED. This gorgeous black dress was, hands down, the STAR of the collection for both of us.
Yes, we know we're moody and mysterious in our black collared dresses ($35, Target).
"I absolutely LOVED this Beatrix Potter/ Wednesday Addams dress," Lauren said. "The 2X laid perfectly on me. The details are to die for and I bet paired with some killer tights it would be the most goth glam I'd ever worn."
Even though the fabric was thin, it surprisingly wasn't see-through. SCORE.
The rabbit details on the collar made this dress quirky-cute.
I also really loved this dress — even though, surprisingly, I wished the hemline was higher — I would gladly order this in every color.
The fabric was loose and breathable, which was quite nice for a dress so structured.
The white cuffs and matching collar was Puritan-esque in the best way.
The collar wasn't too tight either, which is often the case for high-neck dresses.
Overall, we were really happy with the Victoria Beckham x Target line. The quality of the pieces were really good, especially for the price. But there's definitely still work to be done for the plus-size offerings!
"Victoria and Target did an amazing job with sizing," said Lauren. "I blindly ordered everything in a 2X, and in general, they all fit great."
But there were still some fit issues — some of the items that fit myself in a straight-size medium didn't transfer as well to a 2X plus-size. But it's a good, inclusive start. If Victoria Beckham and Target continue collaborating, it would be great to see silhouettes that work on a variety of sizes and also heights — because doesn't everyone deserve fashion that spices up their life?
