Wedding food can cause a lot of drama. Some people have dietary concerns that need to be accommodated, or the couple getting married has a specific vision or budget for the meal that proves problematic. Just because it’s their choice to make, it doesn’t mean people are going to respect it. While it’s an extreme reaction and doesn’t happen often, people have been known to sneak their own food into wedding receptions. This apparently can include the wedding cake.
One passive-aggressive mother-in-law recently brought a second wedding cake to her son’s wedding because she didn’t like the bride’s choice.
A guest at the wedding told the tale on Reddit.
In the r/weddingshaming forum, the guest revealed that she had gone to a friend’s wedding. According to the guest “everything was going smooth until the cake” when the groom’s mom suddenly grabbed the microphone.
“Originally I thought it was gonna be a toast,” the person wrote. But that was not what was about to go down.
“She says ‘I just want everyone to know I paid for half this wedding and I didn’t approve that cake. It’s dry. I tried it earlier,’” the OP wrote.
The bride was furious and no one knew how to react.
After her announcement, the MIL pulled a plastic storage container out from under the table. It contained “a full, homemade sheet cake,” that the woman “slapped” onto the table.
“This is carrot. From scratch. With real cream cheese frosting. You’re welcome,” she said before walking away.

To make things worse, people actually started eating the MIL’s cake.
“One groomsman says it’s actually better than the real cake,” the OP wrote. As people ate, the bride stormed out of the reception with the groom following her. According to the OP, the MIL “smiles like she won.”
It was apparently “months” before the bride began talking to her MIL again. Their relationship has been repaired, but the couple allegedly “banned ‘unauthorized desserts’ at their baby shower.”
Naturally, the wedding cake incident is “still a sore topic.”
The commenters were overwhelmingly team bride.
“I can’t believe the guests would eat the clearly passive aggressive cake,” one person wrote. “As a guest, I would make a bit of a show of how the MIL cake was not touched by anyone and I’d rave about how delicious the actual wedding cake was (even if it wasn’t).”
Someone else wrote: “Someone should have just tossed MIL’S cake on the floor out of respect for the bride and groom! I would NEVER be fine with MIL again!”
“I would have gotten up and tossed her cake in the trash,” another commenter added. To this, someone replied, “I think this is where either one of the groomsmen or bridesmaids should’ve taken one for the team and done it with no questions asked. Straight in the bin.”
“I would’ve picked up that Tupperware cake and smashed her face in it since she wanted to be part of the wedding that badly,” another comment reads.
