Another Oklahoma Teacher Has Been Caught Drunk in the Classroom

Oklahoma school staff contacted police last week because they suspected one of their teachers was drunk. Teacher Jennifer Davis reportedly appeared intoxicated while in her Cross Timbers Elementary School classroom in Tecumseh. Police body camera footage shows officers performing a field sobriety test and questioning Davis about her day.

Davis complied with officers but claimed she was not under the influence of alcohol. A breathalyzer proved otherwise, however, and Tecumseh police took the teacher into custody. Tecumseh Public Schools quickly addressed the situation and notified parents.

School officials contacted police early in the morning.

Concerned school employees called Tecumseh Police around 8:45 a.m. September 7 to report Davis, according to a report from News 9.

“We received a call yesterday morning from the school superintendent letting us know that he felt like he may have a teacher that was in the classroom who could be under the influence of alcohol,” said Tecumseh Police Chief JR Kidney, per News 9.

Officers enabled a body cam that recorded the interaction with Davis.

Officers began questioning the teacher, who claimed she just had a glass of wine the night before. Her behavior appeared suspicious, so officers began a field sobriety test. Footage reportedly shows Davis performing tasks at an officer’s request.

This included blowing into a breathalyzer machine. According to Law & Crime, her blood alcohol level was .066. The legal limit is .08 when someone is driving.

Police arrested Davis on a public intoxication charge.

After she failed their tests, police took Davis into custody and brought her to a police station.

“They asked if we would send an officer to perform a sobriety test. So, our officers responded to Cross Timbers Elementary School where they performed a field sobriety test," Kidney said, per News 9. "And they felt that the conclusion of the sobriety test was that she was under the influence and ultimately she was arrested for a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication and transported to the Pottawatomie County Safety Center where she was processed.”

He further explained that she was in a school setting, not driving, so she was charged with public intoxication.

Davis resigned from the school district.

Tecumseh Public Schools issued a statement on Facebook explaining the situation and assuring the public that all children were safe. The district said Davis is no longer employed with the district and that a sbustitute teacher has been put in place while it is working on Davis' replacement.

“We will not be sharing the details with our students, and we are not aware of any student who witnessed any of today’s events. While this situation is disturbing and unsettling, it is so important that we partner together to make our schools the very best they can be," the district posted on Facebook. "Thank you for your support of Tecumseh Public Schools.”

Kimberly Coates, 53, allegedly showed up intoxicated to her job as a third-grade teacher at Perkins-Tryon School. Coates was also recorded on a police body cam performing a sobriety test. According to police, her blood alcohol was .24, three times the legal limit, KIRO reported.

Coates desperately tried to prevent her arrest, vehemently denying she was drunk, but ultimately ended up in police custody. According to a statement from the city of Perkins, “Ms. Coates was placed under arrest and transported to the Payne County Jail on the anticipated District Court charge of Public Intoxication.”

Police arrested Coates on August 17, the first day of school.
