Dad of 7 Killed in Carjacking After Suspect Allegedly Murdered His Own Mother

A Las Vegas man’s alleged wild shooting spree resulted in the death of not only his own mother, but also a father of seven. Jerry Lopez was on his way to work when he was reportedly carjacked by Justin Davidson. Davidson, who had been running from police, reportedly fired into Lopez’s van.

Afterward, police say Davidson ran to the side of the van, entered it from the passenger side and pushed Lopez out. Davidson reportedly ran over Lopez’s body with the stolen vehicle as he tried to escape police.

Davidson reportedly began shooting at around 3:46 a.m.

Before Davidson and Lopez’s paths crossed, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police received a call at 3:46 a.m. about a shooting, People reported. Later, they learned that Davidson, 36, was allegedly shooting a rifle behind his parents’ home. When Davidson’s parents moved toward the area where he was shooting, Davidson allegedly aimed at the couple, killing his mother.

His father fled the scene in a truck. Davidson allegedly shot at the retreating vehicle. When authorities arrived, they say Davidson began shooting at them from a hidden location. Eventually, he allegedly stole a patrol car and left the scene.

Police say Davidson stole several vehicles before he came across Lopez.

Eventually, police lost track of Davidson during the chase. Davidson abandoned the patrol car and allegedly carjacked several people who were in a truck. None of those people were physically harmed, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police reports. Davidson abandoned the truck and reportedly carjacked another person’s SUV. Then, he pulled alongside Lopez in his van.

By the time, Davidson had stolen Lopez’s van, police had caught up with him. Authorities demanded that Davidson exit Lopez’s vehicle. When there was no further movement in the van, law enforcement moved in. Davidson was declared dead at the scene.

A GoFundMe has been launched for Lopez's family.

Lopez, who was just four minutes away from his home, pulled over after seeing the flashing lights and sirens of the police cars. That’s when Davidson approached his car, apparently killed him and then ran over his body, according to the description of the incident on the GoFundMe page established to help support Lopez’s family.

"Jerry was the heart of our family, and while we cannot bring him back, your support ensures his love and legacy continue to guide us," Jerry's wife, Karen Sculli-Lopez, wrote on the GoFundMe page. So far, the fund has raised more than $390,000 of the $600,000 goal.

Lopez's wife said she collapsed in the middle of the road when she learned the news.

Sculli-Lopez told KVVU that she learned of her husband’s death when she went to look for him after learning he never made it to work.

“There were so many people walking around and I just hoping that he was a witness and that they tried to take the car and he was answering questions, and I was praying that was going on,” Karen said.

Sadly, that wasn’t the case. “My stepdad had to catch me because I just collapsed in the middle of the road and kind of passed out because I couldn’t handle it. It didn’t seem real," she said.

'We were supposed to grow old together,' Sculli-Lopez said.

Sculli-Lopez explained that she and her late husband adopted six of their seven children from the foster care system in hopes of giving them a better life. The oldest child is 11 years old.

“There were kids that needed a home and we had a home. We were supposed to grow old together and raise them together," she said.

She also shared that her husband, a driver for a medical company, had just been promoted. Excited, he went all out with Christmas presents this year. "He was just so proud to have a business card with his name and title he was just so proud,” Karen shared. “He was so happy to be able to start giving them out to his clients, obviously I told him I wanted to frame one for him."

The investigation into Davidson and his crimes is still ongoing and is being examined by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team.
