10-Year-Old Girl’s Body Found a Day After Floodwaters Swept Her Away at a Texas Park

A small town in Texas prayed for a miracle after a 10-year-old child went missing. Rising floodwaters swept away third grader Devah Woods in Brenham about 5 p.m. May 5, 2025. The child reportedly got caught in the water near Fireman’s Park. The Brenham Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team responded along with Washington County EMS. Witnesses and Brenham police officers tried to rescue the child. Sadly, they were not successful. The Brenham Independent School District announced the discovery of her body on May 6.

Brenham ISD shared a statement with school families on its Facebook page, that reads:

Dear Brenham ISD Families, Staff, and Community,

It is with profound sadness that we share an update regarding Devah Woods, the Brenham Elementary third-grade student who was reported missing following yesterday’s severe weather. Despite the tireless efforts of local emergency responders and volunteers, Devah was found and has tragically passed away.

Our hearts are broken for Devah’s family, and we ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time.

Counseling and support services are available for all students and staff who may need them as we grieve together as a community.

We remain deeply grateful for the dedication of our local law enforcement, fire, EMS, specialized rescue teams, and the many community members who worked tirelessly to assist in the search and support the family.

In moments like these, we are reminded of the strength, compassion, and unity that define Brenham. Please continue to lift up the Woods family with love and prayer.

According to the Brenham Fire Department, multiple agencies worked through the night to find the missing girl. In addition to manpower, they employed canines, drones, and thermal imaging to try to find the child. Crews called off the search late Monday evening after another round of severe weather made its way into town.

“We remain deeply committed to finding this child and bringing her home. We ask the community to continue praying for the child, her family, and all the first responders. We will share updates as soon as we are able,” the fire department shared on Facebook.

“Praying God wraps his arms around all those searching and this child. Nothing is impossible with HIM. My heart breaks for this family,” a follower wrote.

“Sending prayers up for the young child & their family. For all the rescue teams and first responders & law enforcement involved. May God protect and be with you all,” another person commented.
