With a little more than an hour before the clock struck midnight, beginning the new year, a Kentucky woman lost her life. Mayra Alejandra Rodríguez Muñoz died in Louisville’s final homicide of 2025 at the McDonald’s on East Market Street. Shoshanha Jones was inside her car in the parking lot when a child reportedly opened a vehicle’s door and hit Jones’ door. This evidently enraged her, and Jones began to yell at the child.
The scene escalated quickly, and Muñoz, who was in one of the vehicles (police have not clarified which), tried to intervene. That’s when things took a horrific turn. Now Jones faces murder charges as Muñoz’s family grieves their loss.
An argument began in the parking lot after the child hit Jones’ car door, WDRB reported. The mother, Lorainne Peña Bolaño, tried to get Jones’ attention off her child and onto her from inside the car, court documents state. Jones allegedly brandished a firearm, and Muñoz, a Navy veteran, got out of the car to defend the mother and child. She was fatally shot in the chest. Bolaño reportedly tried to record the altercation with her phone, but Jones took it from her and left the scene.
Police identified Jones as a suspect after finding her identification near the scene, WDRB reported. As a convicted felon, she unlawfully possessed a firearm at the time of the shooting.
Juanisha Saunders’ close friend manages the McDonald’s. Following the shooting, Saunders told WLKY that the incident affected many people.
“She went to go check on them and to had to see somebody baby laying there,” she told the outlet. “Not everybody’s built to see death. Not everybody’s built for that type of life. She is traumatized. The workers are traumatized.”
During a court appearance, Jones’ attorney, Keith Kamenish, said police did not release all the details.
“These are young adults that are going to be hitting 18 pretty soon, and they were approaching her, all three at the time of the shooting,” he shared with WAVE. “It’s one shot, okay? And she was there for a lawful purpose, eating her food when these people came out and the incident began.”
He added that Jones has several children to care for, but the judge set her bond at $500,000. She’s also banned from contact with any McDonald’s or the families involved in the case.
According to a GoFundMe account, Muñoz was a proud Navy veteran. “Mayra served her country honorably through multiple deployments and carried herself with strength, compassion, and an infectious smile—even while bearing invisible wounds. After her service, she continued to live with courage and selflessness, always putting others before herself,” the page reads. “In a final act of heroism, Mayra was tragically killed while trying to save a life.”
When will people learn that violence isn’t the answer? We weren’t there and don’t know exactly what happened, but it sure didn’t seem worth someone losing their life.
