Naming a baby can be a daunting task. There are so many baby names to choose from and unbelievable pressure to make the right choice. Sure, you can change a baby’s name, but most parents choose one and stick with it once it’s on the birth certificate. Baby name inspiration comes from all kinds of places. You may choose your baby’s name because of a beloved family member. Or maybe you had a favorite TV or book character who affected your life significantly and that name seems perfect for your child.
It’s your baby, and you should be able to choose. But are some baby names just too unique? Yes. Do people name their kids crazy things anyway? Of course. Should people call them out? That’s up to you to judge.
If you ask people who work with children, they may tell you what not to name a kid based on experience. Teachers often have lists of names they would never give to their kids because of how they work – or don’t – in a classroom. But it’s not just teachers. Medical professionals working in labor and delivery have heard all kinds of baby names, from the beautiful to the bizarre. A nursing school student thought it would be fun to poll nurses about the worst baby names they’ve ever heard and posted in the Reddit tragedeigh forum. And it’s, well … wow.
The original poster wrote, “I’m in nursing school and recently had a rotation on the labor and delivery floor so of course I had to ask what the worst tragedeighs they’ve seen. Here are some of the standouts Ya’AllJealous My’King Twins named Awasha and Adrya Jream.”
But it gets worse. OP also knew of triplets whose parents went wild.
“Triplets named Moana, Pocahontas, and Elsa respectively. The worst part about this one is that the parents were huge Disney Adults and they’re fully Caucasian,” OP wrote.
After that mic drop, it was time to hear from others. The comment section perked up immediately, and people reported all kinds of crazy names.
“I think the worst one I’ve seen personally was Ryderdie 😬 (unsurprisingly, it was on a local Amber alert. Thankfully poor Ryderdie was found, but with a name and parents like that…),” someone shared.
One poor guy went by a different name because he hated it so much.
“I had a coworker named Carkey. His parents were from China and liked the sound of “car key” as they were learning English so they used it as his name. He went by Jeremy at work,” he wrote.
Then, of course, there were lots of comments about twins. Similar twin names can be adorable, but names that are too close are just confusing.
“My winner is still twin girls named Roxanne and Roxanna,” someone shared.
Plenty of people had similar stories.
“Blood bank here. Had a case where twin boys were named nearly identically but one twin had an extra letter. Think: Douglas and Douglass. Medical records merged their accounts and it was a royal PITA to prove that there were 2 babies, not just one,” the person shared.
Then we’ve got the people who spice things up with alternative spellings. Why can’t they leave it alone?
“My neighbor has two girls. They’re Nora and Nova, cute right? Except they’re spelled Knora and Knova,” the commenter shared.
Of course, some families like to use their last name to be creative. One user went to school with brothers with interesting names.
“Not sure if it’s considered a tragedeigh, but I went to school with 3 boys with the last name Rocket. Steel Rocket, Sky Rocket, and Storm Rocket,” the person commented.
But there was another comment that might just take the cake as the worst name on the list.
“Had a first grade student lonh time ago sweet little total towhead with trash parents named her Pleazur… families last name was Cox,” someone wrote.
Ugh. Some people just shouldn’t name things – not even a dog.
