I feel as though I am a fairly forgiving person. I’ve made enough mistakes in my life to know that no one will ever get it right 100% of the time. However, I struggle forgiving blatantly abusive people, especially parents, whose most important job in life is to care for and protect their children. It’s probably why stories like 5-year-old Zona Byrd’s are particularly distressing, because her parents were the undeniable arbiters of her torment and eventual death.
In October 2024, Bernice Byrd and Gerald Byrd’s 5-year-old daughter, Zona, dropped dead from malnutrition, People reported, weighing a distressing 17.5 pounds as recorded in a news release from the state’s attorney’s office for Baltimore City.
On October 14, 2024, Baltimore Police Department officers responded to a report of a 5-year-old victim who was unresponsive. Zona was lying in a bed on the second floor of the home, unresponsive and cold to the touch. She was later declared dead the same day, the news release noted. Her three siblings, who were home when she died, were taken to Johns Hopkins Medical Center for evaluation. Zona’s 6-year-old brother, who weighed 35 pounds, looked emaciated and “could barely stand or walk” when he was found.
While investigators were at the home, they noticed no food was accessible in the cupboards for the children. The fridge had a singular salad inside and only frozen meat in the freezer, the release shared. The parents, however, had nonperishable snacks in their locked bedroom closet.
On February 26, 2026, the couple pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first-degree child abuse for starving the 5-year-old as well as their 6-year-old son, People reported. The two face life in prison, which will be determined at their sentencing hearing on June 10.
A relative is caring for the remaining three children. The family launched a GoFundMe account at the time to help cover Zona’s funeral expenses, as well as help the living children with their immediate needs.
“No punishment will be as severe for these defendants as living with the knowledge that they murdered their innocent child. Today’s guilty plea does ensure the safety of Zona’s siblings, who are also victims of their parents’ horrific actions,” State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates shared in the news release.
“As a father, the facts of this case are nauseating, and my heart continues to ache for Zona, who is gone from us far too soon,” Bates added. “I want to thank the Baltimore Police Department for their diligence on this case and my Special Victims Unit prosecutors for finding a resolution that both delivers justice and spares this family from the trauma of a trial.”
