Police in Missouri responded to a 911 call late on Mother’s Day evening regarding a shooting. When they arrived at 59-year-old Cacey Bright’s home, they found her 21-year-old daughter with a gunshot wound to the head. The woman appeared to have a life-threatening injury, and police immediately began to administer aid. EMS rushed her to a hospital while police talked to her mother about what happened. What Bright shared was shocking.
According to court documents, Bright told an officer that cellphone photos would give a timeline of the day’s events.
“The first few photos appeared to be taken by Bright and showed Bright handling a pistol magazine that was loaded with bullets. I continued scrolling and observed photos of Bright handling a blue and pink handgun with the slide locked back into place, then with the slide forward and the gun loaded,” an officer wrote in the report. “The firearm photographed was the same 9mm firearm located inside the vehicle.”
The officer explained that the last few photos on the phone appeared to have been taken by another person.
“The final photos showed Bright pointing the loaded firearm directly at the camera. Her finger was on the trigger and she had her right eye closed as though she was aiming the gun directly at [redacted]. The last photo in Bright’s camera roll was a burst of three photos. It looked as though the picture had been taken while the phone was falling,” the report states. “The first two of the burst photos show what appears to be Bright and the phone is upside down. The last of the burst photos appears to be the phone resting on the ground inside the vehicle.”
Bright allegedly told police she was loading the magazine and may have pulled the trigger, per the report. Police advised Bright that she needed to go to the station for further questioning. She reportedly stated she wanted to talk to a lawyer.
“All questioning ceased at this point. While en route to the station, Bright repeated ‘Thank you Jesus,'” the report notes.
The story shocked many people who claimed to know Bright and her daughter. They shared their disbelief on the Cape Girardeau Police Department’s Facebook page.
“What Cape PD FAILED TO MENTION is that the victim was not only her daughter, but also has Down syndrome,” someone wrote.
“It’s just crazy that I knew her and her daughter and I used to think she treated her daughter so well it’s wild How much meth can destroy somebody,” another person agreed.
Prosecutors charged Bright with felony first-degree domestic assault and felony armed criminal action. A judge ordered Bright to be held on a $1 million cash-only bond, and her next court date is May 15, according to KFVS. Bright’s daughter remains in critical condition.
