On August 23, 2025, a group of students went to Abu Talat Beach in Alexandria, Egypt, for a school trip. Tragically, while there, six of them died and 24 others were injured due to dangerous conditions on the beach. To deal with the emergency situation, 16 ambulances arrived at the scene. Three students were treated at the beach and didn’t need to go to the hospital, while 21 others were taken to hospitals in the area, reported Gulf News.
The students who were taken to the hospital are being treated for asphyxia-related complications. Authorities are still investigating the tragic incident to determine exactly what happened, per The Mirror. In the meantime, they’re reminding “the public to adhere to safety guidelines on beaches.”
Local officials have also implemented more safety measures. They closed the beach and issued red-flag warnings to inform people about the strong currents. Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said the hospitalized students are being closely monitored as they receive medical care.

On August 25, Metro reported that five of the victims had been identified: Habeeba El-Sayed, Nour Mamdouh, Salma Essam, Fares Yasser, and Wessa Sawiris. They were all 16 years old. The sixth teenager who died has not been identified thus far.
According to the news outlet, the students reportedly entered the water to swim but struggled against the waves due to strong currents.
Per the Egypt Independent, local authorities continued to warn people about dangerous water conditions on August 26. Waves reportedly remain “dangerously high” days after the drowning incident.
