Missing 16-Year-Old Known as ‘Beacon of Joy’ Found Beaten & Shot to Death in Remote Missouri Woods

Kayla Huff’s parents reported the 16-year-old missing on May 6, 2026. The teenager seemingly disappeared from her Moberly, Missouri, home and crews desperately searched for her for more than a week. On May 14, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office announced deputies had found Kayla’s remains in a remote section of the Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area. Authorities arrested six people in connection with Kayla’s death. The details of the alleged crime are nothing short of evil.

Kayla reportedly died a brutal death.

Police arrested Julian Mason, 26, Christopher Hull, 23, Alayna Mason, 20, and Hunter Ames, 19, in connection with Kayla’s death, according to court documents obtained by KOMU. Alayna Mason allegedly told multiple people that she and an accomplice abducted Kayla and put her in the trunk of a car.

Alayna Mason claimed she took Kayla to the Rudolf Bennitt Conservation. She reportedly beat Kayla with a baton and then shot the teenage girl. Hull and Ames apparently aided in the crimes, and Ames allegedly provided the pistol used to shoot Kayla.

The suspects seemingly targeted the teenager.

The four suspects allegedly tampered with Kayla’s gas tank to make her car stop running, KOMU reported. A witness claimed to have seen Julian Mason hold a funnel while another suspect poured a substance into the teenager’s fuel tank. The suspects allegedly kidnapped Kayla a short time later.

Each of the suspects reportedly played a unique role in the teenager’s abduction and death. Police arrested Alayna Mason on May 7. She allegedly escaped from police while in handcuffs and stole a sheriff’s deputy’s marked vehicle the day after Kayla disappeared.  On May 18, KOMU reported the arrest of 24-year-old Skylar Powell, who allegedly hid Alayna Mason in his basement.

Per KRCG, prosecutors charged Alayna Mason with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, facilitating a felony, inflicting injury, and terrorizing. Ames faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, facilitating a felony, inflicting injury, terrorizing, and tampering with physical evidence.

Hull and Julian Mason each have been charged with first-degree kidnapping, facilitating a felony, inflicting injury, terrorizing, and tampering with physical evidence. Powell faces a charge of hindering prosecution.

Police also arrested a 17-year-old but did not release any details about the suspect or involvement in the case.

Kayla’s death has shattered her family.

Kayla’s obituary describes a happy student at Moberly High School who loved working with young children and stayed involved with her church.

“Kayla was a beacon of joy, known for her ever-present smile and a hug ready for anyone in need of comfort. Her kindness was a constant, and her encouragement inspired those around her to be their best selves,” the obituary reads. “Outgoing with a unique sense of humor, Kayla’s personality was a vibrant tapestry of warmth and laughter that will be dearly missed.”

The motive behind the brutal crime remains unclear. But what could a teenage girl have done to a group of adults to deserve such a tragic end? Absolutely nothing.
