Maria Mendoza just wanted to grab a quick meal at Burger King after her daughter’s high school graduation. She had no idea she was about to change someone’s life in the most incredible way. Mendoza saw Mykale Baker, who had just graduated himself, working behind the counter at Burger King, still wearing his medals. Mendoza couldn’t believe the teen’s positive attitude, so she began filming.
She posted video of Baker on TikTok and he became a viral sensation. Now, because of the generosity of strangers, his dream of going to college will come true. Mendoza told 11 Alive Baker’s smile struck her.
“He was so kind, so polite,” she said. “Radiating joy, even after such a big day. His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that.”
She posted a 21-second clip of Baker on TikTok, which amassed 4.5 million views. She then started a GoFundMe in hopes of raising money for the teen.
“While many graduates spent the night celebrating with friends and family, one young man quietly showed the world what determination looks like. Just after receiving his diploma — still proudly wearing his medals — he reported to his shift at Burger King,” she wrote on GoFundMe. “He didn’t do it for attention. He doesn’t even know his story went viral. But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic.”

Mendoza set a goal of $60,000, and donors knocked it out of the park. They’ve raised more than $185,000 so far.
Donors shared words of encouragement with the graduate.
“Mykale, Your work ethic and grind is contagious,” someone shared on GoFundMe. “We are rooting for you and investing in your future. You already have a strong foundation to succeed. I hope you take this opportunity to pursue higher education in a career that will bring you joy and a generous salary. -First Generation College Grad from Fresno, California.”
“Have it ‘Your way right away!'” another donor wrote. “May the Lord be the lamp to your feet and the light to your path. Congrats and good luck, Mykale!”
Alive 11 reported that Burger King and the Burger King Foundation got in on the excitement and gave Baker a $10,000 scholarship. But it didn’t stop there. The foundation thanked Mendoza for recognizing Baker and gave her daughter a $10,000 scholarship for her neuroscience studies as well.
