‘Scorned’ Woman on the Run for Reportedly Poisoning Teen Girls Rescued From River

I have vivid memories of watching Lifetime movies with my grandmother as a younger girl. She lived with us my entire childhood and often claimed the one TV in our home, which was in the living room. A lot of those movies centered on scorned women who snapped and took their rejection out on the world, and I remember being floored when I heard some of those stories were actually real. We watched them so much that when wild stories popped up on the news, we’d all joke it was the next Lifetime movie. And I have to say, this latest news about a scorned lover who exacted revenge on her former partner and went on the run surely has the makings of a Lifetime film.

People reported that Zulma Guzman Castro was rescued alive from the River Thames in the UK near the Battersea Bridge after being on the run. Castro is the primary suspect in the deaths of two minors in Bogota, Colombia. According to The London Times, Ines de Bedout, 14, and Emilia Forero, 13, both fell ill after eating chocolate-covered raspberries laced with thallium in April 2025.

Police suspect that the young girls were killed as part of a revenge plot after it was revealed Castro had an affair with Ines’ father, Juan Bedot, that came to an end.

In a statement to People, the Metropolitan Police confirmed authorities were called on December 16, with reports of a woman in distress at the Battersea Bridge.

“The Met’s Marine Policing Unit recovered a woman in her 50s from the water at 07.14hrs and she was taken to hospital, where her injuries have since been deemed not life-threatening or life-changing,” police noted in the statement.

Laura Sarabia, the Colombian ambassador to the United Kingdom, confirmed it was Castro who was being treated at the London hospital, according to Colombian publication El Nuevo Siglo. The outlet also detailed that under British law, authorities must wait until Castro is discharged before formally arresting her.

The Times noted that Colombian authorities instructed the UK to capture her and believe that Westminster magistrates had a warrant out for her arrest. Castro, a business owner who previously appeared on Shark Tank Colombia, allegedly intended to harm her former lover with the raspberries but has denied being behind the murders.

Pedro Forero, the father of one of the victims, honored his daughter with a sentimental tribute on Facebook

“Daughter, you will always be the greatest love I as a father can ever feel. There is no girlfriend or wife that can generate the love I had when I had you, and with this love I will go until the last day of my life,” he wrote in his post. “I love you and I will love you for the rest of my life. I cry for the stories we won’t be able to live. I appreciate who you were and what you taught me. You were and will be the cutest thing I had in my life.”
