Mom’s Night Out Turns Into a Nightmare After Stranger Gave Her a Drink That Landed Her In the ICU

A young mother from Wyoming reportedly accepted a drink from a stranger at a bar on New Year’s Eve, and her family claims it nearly cost her life. Kailey Kline, 23, celebrated the new year with friends at Silver Dollar Bar in Cody, where she allegedly accepted a drink that appeared to have contained antifreeze. Kline became so sick she was air-flighted to a hospital in Billings, Montana, where she stayed for a week, fighting for her life.

Today she is weak but on the road to recovery. Her mother, Amber Espinoza, shared her story with the Cowboy State Daily to prevent others from ending up in the same situation. The mother’s message was clear: If a stranger offers you a drink, “don’t drink it.”

It seemed like a typical night out.

According to Espinoza, Kline isn’t much of a partier but the mother of two wanted to ring in 2025 with friends. They went to Silver Dollar Bar and had a good time. She said her daughter remembered a stranger handing her a drink near closing time at 1:30 a.m.

Shortly after accepting the cocktail, Kline fell ill. Her fiancé picked her up from the bar and said she appeared a bit intoxicated but nothing too out of the ordinary. That changed a short time later.

Once at home, things changed dramatically.

Espinoza told the Cowboy State Daily that her daughter started to vomit and seize. Her fiancé called 911 for help. When the first responders arrived, they reportedly gave her valium, but it didn’t stop the seizures.

“They weren’t sure why this was all happening,” Espinoza said.

Thankfully, she told emergency responders she believed someone spiked her drink before they intubated her in the ambulance. Crews eventually life-flighted Kline to St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings.

They may never know what actually happened to Kline.

Espinoza said Kline’s condition worsened while she was in the hospital. Medical staff tried numerous treatments, but when one symptom improved, another would worsen, the Cowboy State Daily reported. But when doctors gave her the antidote for antifreeze, her body responded almost immediately.

“They’ll never give a definite unless they can prove it,” Espinoza said. Her mother said when medical staff removed the breathing tube, one of her first statements was, “I got roofied.”

Police continue to investigate the case.

Kline apparently remembers what the person who handed her the drink looked like, and the Cody Police Department is investigating.

“We’re still working through this case to solidify what happened,” Cody Police Lieutenant Juston Wead told Cowboy State Daily.

Wead said it’s important to stay vigilant while drinking. “It’s important to make sure you are aware of your drink because those types of things can happen,” the lieutenant said. “Don’t accept drinks from people you don’t know, don’t leave your drink unattended.”

Her mom agreed and said, “A lot of people want to be nice and buy you drinks, but if you don’t know them, don’t drink it.”

Espinoza wants to help ease her daughter’s financial stress.

She created a GoFundMe account to help with Kline’s medical bills. She praised her finance for staying by Kline’s side.

“Shawn has been her rock! He’s stayed calm, humble and positive in such a chaotic situation. He showed up every day, and spent every visiting hour by her side,” Espinoza wrote in an update on the page. “He fed and combed her hair when she was too weak to do it herself. He has the patience of a saint! Had it not been for his instincts to call an ambulance, this could have been a very different scenario. My Mama heart is so thoroughly impressed and grateful for this man God sent her!”

They’ve raised nearly $13,000 of a $15,000 goal thus far.
