Mom Posts ‘Nude’ Photo of Daughter on Instagram & Has Account Deleted

Many of us posts photos of our kids on social media. Instagram is one of my favorite places to post, mostly because I love an easily edited image. I've seen tons of adorable kid images of the people I follow on the site, including ones of kids in diapers and in a sudsy tub. Blogger and store owner Courtney Adamo has four kids — two girls and two boys. She posts many images of her daily life with her family. She said that there were four years of images, but Instagram deleted her account because her photos were said to have violated their community standards of nudity.

The photo that reportedly got her account deleted was one of her baby daughter wearing underwear and lifting her dress to show off her belly.

Apparently Courtney's Instagram photos have been reported to the powers that be and she was given warnings. Courtney says that she received around seven different notifications saying that Instagram removed an image because it was deemed inappropriate. The company doesn't tell the "violator" what image was deleted, and because Courtney knew she didn't post any obscene images, she thought it was in error.

Until she posted the photo of her daughter Marlow lifting her top and showing off her adorable baby belly.

She posted the image once, and it was gone. Then posted it again, and that's when her whole Instagram account was removed. All those years of photos and moments disappeared. This makes me upset.

Who is reporting these images? Who — at Instagram — is in charge of making that decision to decide images are inappropriate? And mostly, who would ever think the above image of this little girl is inappropriate?

Courtney wrote on her blog Babyccino Kids:

On Wednesday evening I posted the above photo of Marlow in her yellow rainboots and her ‘big girl undies’. … I thought it was such a sweet photo of my baby girl and her gorgeous, round belly (and outie belly button). And I love that her pride is so evident in the photo – such a sweet and innocent shot of a successful day of potty-training. On Thursday morning the photo was gone from my feed and a another Instagram email was in my inbox. At least this time I knew which photo they had removed. I went back to re-read the guidelines; I read the entire page twice and was positive that I had not violated any rules. Unless a baby’s belly is considered ‘nudity’…but surely it isn’t! She is a BABY!  It is no different than a photo of a baby wearing a nappy, or a little boy in swim trunks, and to entertain the idea that it is even remotely inappropriate is a disgusting thing in itself.

Many are supporting Courtney, including me, who feel that this photo in no way violates Instagram's guidelines. Instagram? Are you reading this? Please explain. I feel they should re-instate her Instagram and offer an explanation on why they feel this violated their terms. I want to know their reasoning.

Do you think Instagram will offer an explanation? What do you think?
