Three of a kind. Triple threat. The Big Three (yes, that’s a This Is Us reference to the triplets Kevin, Kate, and Randall for all the fans of the hit NBC show). How mind-blowing must it be to give birth to triplets, or to be a triplet? It's probably easy name a few sets of twins, but it’s so much more rare to know triplets. In fact, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, triplets account for only about 4,300 sets in 3.9 million births, just a little more than 0.1%, or 1 in 1,000. Statistics vary, but some research suggests conceiving triplets naturally occurs one in every 9,000 births. When using fertility assistance, the likelihood increases to around 1 in every 40.
Once the triplets are on the way, naming them is a huge hurdle. When naming twins, it’s a little easier to find names that complement each other, but thinking about names for triplets it can be a bit trickier only because the combinations are endless. We’re here to help with trios of names that work together because of alliteration (they begin with a similar sound), they are similar style of names like classic or rock star names, or they are inspired by a common theme, like nature. We’ve also listed multiple combinations of names for triplets like two boys and a girl, two girls and a boy, three boys and three girls. We hope this inspires and helps nail down names for the coming "Big Three!"
Samuel, Sebastian & Sophia
Though they’re not all biblical names, these monikers have strong meanings that will carry children far. Samuel is a Hebrew name that literally means "the one who listens to God," but is often translated as “God has heard.” Sebastian comes from the Greek name Sebastianos and means “venerable,” and Sophia is Greek “wisdom” with versions including Sofie and Sophie.
Tabitha, Tess & Travis
Expecting two girls and a boy? We love this set of names starting with T. They don’t have the same beginning sounds, so it’ll be easier to shout their names "Tabitha," "Tess," and "Travis," as they get older without becoming confused in the process. Tabitha means "graceful" in Aramaic; Tess is a short form of Theresa or Ester, which means "harvester"; and Travis is of French origin, meaning "to cross."
Mayson, Maia & Markus
It’s the uncommon spellings of traditional names that do it for us. We love Mason, Maya and Marcus, but we also love this trio. Mason is a name from the Bible, meaning "one who works with stone; Maya is an old Persian name, which means "generous"; and Marcus is an ancient Roman referring to the god Mars. No matter how these names are spelled, they're ready to take over the world!
Penelope, Parker & Peyton
These three names have a traditional feel, but also sound modern and interesting together. Kourtney Kardashian's daughter is named Penelope and she named her website after the nickname they call her, Poosh. Parker (an old English name mean "park keeper") reminds of the boyishly dashing Peter Parker also known as his alter ego, Spider-Man. Peyton Manning is a famous football player but Peyton List is a young adult Disney channel actress (she also happens to have a twin brother). The name of Irish origin means "fighting man's estate."
Kaia, Keanu & Kailani
If these three names immediately invoke calming Hawaiian vibes, it’s because they are Hawaiian names. Kaia means “she who reigns over the Earth,” and Keanu (as in the actor with the last name Reeves) means “he who comes." Last but not least is Kailani, which means “she that surrounds." Beautiful meanings to match these beautiful-sounding names.
Zayn, Zachary & Zara
Names beginning with Z are rare, but these triplet names are some of the most gorgeous and powerful monikers. Fittingly, Zayn is also the name of the attractive former One Direction musical group member. Zayn means “beauty.” Zachary is a more common name, which means “God remembers.” Zara, which we've also seen spelled Zarah, means "radiance."
Alexander, Amelia & Alonzo
These names fall within a theme of stand-up personalities. Alexander means “defender of men,” while Amelia is derived from the Germanic word amal, meaning “work." The name Alonzo is of Spanish and Italian origins and means “noble.” If it turns out Alexander is a girl, just change the name to Alexandra or Alexie, which also means "ready for battle" and “noble.”
Clarissa, Carson & Kiera
Just to switch things up a bit, these three names have the same beginning sounds but Kiera is the only K name. Clarissa is a Germanic name that means “bright," Carson is a Scandinavian name that means “son of the marsh-dwellers,” and Keira is an Anglicized version of Ciara (which is another great choice to round out this trio of names), the name of a seventh-century saint, and means "dark haired" in Irish.
Atlas, Damon & Adonis
This trio of names for your triplet sons are derived from Greek mythology. They’re big shoes to fill, but Atlas was the son of a Titan, who was punished by Zeus and forced to support the sky on his shoulders. Atlas was also known as a wise man and the founder of astronomy. Damon was a God who risked his life for his friend, and in ancient Greek mythology Adonis was a god of youth, beauty, and attraction and the name means “lord.”
Ezra, Jude & Luke
Unique names are perfect for a special set of sons. Modern and cool vibes are coming from these names. Ezra is a Hebrew name that means “helper,” while Jude is a Greek name meaning “praised." The last name, Luke, is from the Bible and it's a name that means “bright" or "the one born at dawn." Variations of the name include Luca, Lucius, and Lucas.
Dawson, Sawyer & Holden
If you favor more classic names, try these. Dawson is a name of Welsh origin that means “son of David”; and Sawyer is an English/American name that means "sawer of wood," though it reminds us of the Tom Sawyer books; and Holden reminds us of the main character in Catcher in the Rye.
Gunner, Jagger & Lennon
Undeniable rock star vibes are on tap with this trio of names. The little music group will have the coolest names around. We love that Jagger and Lennon can be names for girls or boys. While Gunner (sometimes spelled Gunnar) means "warrior," Jagger is a name of English origins and means "carter." It makes sense that Lennon means "blackbird," since legendary Beatles member John Lennon co-wrote a song called "Blackbird" with his bandmate Paul McCartney.
Sawyer, Kate & Jack
If you're fans of one of the most popular TV shows of all time, Lost, bring back the names of the three main characters of the drama, which aired from 2004 to 2010. If you have never heard of the show, maybe these names will still work for the triplets. Sawyer, as mentioned above, means "sawer of wood." Kate is a short form of Katherine, which has English origins and means "pure." Jack can stand on its own or be a short form of Jackson, it means "God is gracious."
Ramona, Sophia & Sage
Three wise daughters deserve three names that mean wise or wisdom. They have a similar vibe but are still independently beautiful. Ramona is the feminine form of Ramon (Spanish) and Raymond (old German) meaning "protecting hands." Sophia is of Greek origins and means "wisdom." Sage is the most uncommon of this trio of names. It means "wise" in Latin and can also be spelled Saige.
Olive, Indigo & Ruby
Colors make for quirky and fun names. We’re feeling all three of these names together, but for parents not into Indigo, maybe the name Blue would work? Beyoncé seems to love the name. Olive has associations with the olive branch as a symbol of peace. Ruby, named after the stunning red jewel, is also considered the short form of the biblical name, Reuben, meaning "behold, a son" in Hebrew.
Wren, Lark & Paloma
These lovely names are all bird-inspired names spoken or written out, Wren, Lark, and Paloma sound beautiful together. A wren is a small bird and the name is of English origins; a lark is a type of songbird; and paloma is Latin (and Spanish) and means "dove," a symbol of peace.
Aaliyah, Josiah & Isaiah
Right away, we notice that these three names have a ‘ah’ ending in common, which sounds soft and melodic. They're also all Hebrew names meaning "exalted or rising," "Jehovah has healed," and "God is salvation." Aaliyah was the R&B singer who died in an airplane crash in 2001. Josiah was the 16th king of Judah who, according to the Old Testament, instituted major religious reforms. Isaiah was the eighth-century BC Israelite prophet after whom the Book of Isaiah is named.
Ariel, Belle & Tiana
If you're into everything Disney, your little princesses deserve these sweet and powerful names. From The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and The Princess and the Frog, your girls will grow up with namesakes they can watch all the time. Ariel is a biblical boys' name, which means "lion of God"; Belle is "beautiful"; and Tiana is of Latin and Russian origins, meaning "princess."
Forrest, Leif & Wolfe
Nature is inspiring, and these names are perfect complements to parents that love the great outdoors or are just looking for uncommon names. If Forrest reminds parents too much of the Tom Hanks classic movie (or Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest), how about Cliff or Adair (which is an oak tree)? Leif is simply a play on the word leaf, but it is of Scandinavian origin and means “descendant,” while Wolfe is for the animal.
Cameron, Cooper & Carter
Cameron is usually seen as a boys' name, but we love the way actress Cameron Diaz has made it a more popular name for girls. It's a Scottish name meaning "crooked nose," or "crooked river." Cooper is of English origins and it's an occupational name for a maker and repairer of wooden vessels. Carter is English for "transporter of goods by cart," finishes off this triple threat of names so well.
Dean, Cade & Tate
Four-letter names with one syllable are straight and to the point. Dean, Cade, and Tate are boys' names with a modern feel. Dean is a Christian name meaning "valley," and Cade is of English origins, meaning "round or barrel." Tate is of English origins and means "cheerful." For parent having one girl, the name Deana can be swapped in instead of Dean.
Liam, Gavin & Brody
Liam is a short form of William, but those four letters stand on their own so well. To go with it, we chose two other two-syllable names for boys — Gavin and Brody — which are not so common, but have similar spirits to them. If there’s a girl in the triplets, try Naomi, Layla, or Grace.
Naomi, Layla & Grace
Naomi is a name of Hebrew origin that means “beautiful” and “gentle”; Layla also of Hebrew origin means “dusk” or “night”; and Grace is the word meaning “goodness,” “beauty,” and “joy.” They blend together so well. As we mentioned, if there’s a boy in the set of triplets, the names Liam, Gavin, and Brody go well with these girls' names, too.
Asher, Blaze & Chance
We couldn't forget about the trend that some parents follow by naming their multiples A, B, and C names. Asher, Blaze, and Chance seem like little boys who command attention. A biblical name, Asher means "happy." Though Blaze sounds like a modern name, it's of Latin origins which means "stutter." Chance is of Middle English origins and is defined as "good fortune."
Evan, Flora & Gaia
For those expecting a boy and two girls, how about Evan, Flora, and Gaia? Evan (short for Evander, a hero of the Trojan war) is a rare name meaning “good man.” Flora is the Roman goddess of flowers, and Gaia (pronounced guy-uh) is the Greek goddess of the Earth. These three names manage to all be in alphabetical order as well, E, F, G!
Clay, Clover & Daisy
For those looking for bohemian feeling names for their triplets, consider Clay, Clover, and Daisy. Clay (or Clayton) is an earthy name and sounds like he could be a dashing Southern gentleman, while Clover means “meadow flower,” which sounds like a creative girl. Singer Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom chose the sweet name Daisy for their baby girl, which has been gaining popularity over the last few years.
Tristan, Lucas & Hayden
These three boy names all fit into the contemporary names category. The names Tristan (Welsh meaning "bold"), Lucas (Latin for "bright" or "shining"), and Hayden (Old English meaning "hedged valley") have been around for centuries, but have become more common in the last decade. Adorable and cool little heartbreakers, for sure.
Isla, Iris & Ivie
The babies' names — Isla, Iris and Ivie — will mean “island,” “rainbow,” and “climbing evergreen,” for the parents who choose them. Isla (pronounced eye-lah) makes us think of the actress Isla Fisher, and an Iris is also a flower that often symbolizes the trinity of truth, hope, and rebirth. Ivie is just a different spelling of Ivy, which is just as beautiful.
Erinn, Finn & Rainn
All ending in “inn,” these three names conjure up calming and cozy vibes. We’re thinking of them as names for two girls (Erinn, Rainn) and a boy (Finn), but they could be for three girls, as well as two boys (Finn, Rainn) and a girl (Erinn). Finn is of Irish origins, and means "white," or "fair." Rainn, of American origins, means "abundant blessings from above." Erinn means "Ireland."
Annabelle, Mirabelle & Isabelle
We adore these names. Annabelle is known in French, English, Hebrew, and Latin to mean "grace" and “beauty.” Mirabelle means “marvelous” in Latin, and Isabelle means “pledged to God” in Hebrew. They’re pretty to say and they can also be split into two names. Anna, Mira, and Isa could be their first names (or nicknames) while all three girls have Belle as a middle name.
