Mom Hears Her 5-Year-Old Autistic Daughter Say She Loves Her for the First Time

It’s not always easy to express the depth of our emotions. For the more seasoned among us, past traumas can prevent us from being vulnerable. Other times, the pressure of putting words to our feelings can just be too great of a burden. When you’re neurodivergent, attempting to fit into a world where you’re often misunderstood, it can be easier to just remain silent.

But one girl with autism used the help of a cellphone and a little distance to record the most touching message for her mother.

Zoey took her mom's phone to record treasures.

Delphine Expert is the mother of 5-year-old Zoey. The mother and daughter pair were outside waiting for a real estate agent to arrive so they could look at a condo, Newsweek reported.

During the wait, Zoey got bored and asked to use her mom’s phone so she could take photos or record a movie of the treasures she’d find on her way. Zoey recorded the grass, the sky, the dandelions. Then she pointed the camera at her mother.

I didn't think I'd be one of the treasures she'd find on her way ❤️

Delphine was a few yards away with her back turned to Zoey. She didn’t know she would be among the list of her daughter’s treasures. With the camera facing her mother, Zoey excitedly says, “Here’s my beautiful mom. She’s the best mom. I love her so much. And she’s the best mom in the whole world.”

When Delphine got her phone back from her daughter, she almost deleted the video, according to Newsweek. Thankfully, she watched to the end and heard her daughter’s heartfelt words.

Zoey was mostly nonverbal up until recently.

This type of impromptu outpouring of love would have been enough to tug at the heartstrings of any parent. But for Delphine, it was even more special because up until a few months ago, Zoey was mostly nonverbal.

"Communicating in this way is a very big challenge and effort” for her, said Delphine. Zoey has gotten to this point only because of the effort her mother has put forth.

The mom is with her “24/7” because of the additional care she requires. Delphine also homeschools her using a virtual online program, complete with teachers and autism support workers.

Delphine's efforts have helped Zoey open up.

In addition to her school curriculum, Zoey’s speaking has gotten better because of her extracurricular activities. She completes art projects, such as creating her own tattoos and lion’s mane. She skis. And recently, she took up playing the violin. After nine months of violin lessons, Zoey was able to perform her first concert, giving a short introductory speech to the audience.

We send all the love to this "beautiful mom." All of your effort is clearly being noticed by the most important person of all – Zoey.
