We never know which of our traits our children will inherit. We spend the time of their gestation wondering and imagining. Will they have my eyes? My partner’s nose? Will they reach back and look like a grandparent? The possibilities are endless.
When these baby bundles finally arrive, we get answers to some of our questions, but with the rate at which newborns change over that first year, the true nature of their looks might still be a mystery. This wasn’t the case for one mother who could see her genetic contribution immediately.

Both mother and daughter have poliosis.
Elma Godwin, a mother of two in the UK, gave birth to her second child last month. In one of the first photos the two took together, she showed the world the delightful surprise she received when she first looked at her baby girl. The child, whom she named Aninoritse Bridget-Chimereya Ludart, had the exact same birthmark, in the same place as her mom.
Birthmarks are common, but this particular one — a patch of white hair in the middle of a sea of black — is something distinct and unique. This phenomenon is called poliosis, a genetic condition that results in the absence of melanin in certain parts of the hair. Although it’s listed as a condition, it’s not serious and does not cause any other symptoms, according to Health.com.
'I gave birth to my twin,' Elma wrote of her newborn daughter.
Elma announced the birth of her daughter with a photo of the two of them and their matching hair on Instagram. “I gave birth to my twin,” Elma wrote in her post, which shows her smiling into the camera.
Her newborn’s eyes are closed, but her expression looks like she just might be smiling too. It’s all too cute to handle.
People online were tickled by the photo.
The mom ended the post expressing how overjoyed and grateful she and her husband are for the arrival of their second daughter.
Naturally, this twin moment struck a chord with the people of the internet. This postpartum picture has received more than half a million likes and plenty of well-wishes.
“This is beautiful. God is awesome. Congratulations. No need of DNA,” one Instagram user commented.
'She's so happy to be here,' one IG user wrote.
Someone else wrote about how this mother-daughter pair are the embodiment of a popular adage, commenting, “The true definition of you see me you see her.”
Another person agreed, writing, “Genes are strong, God bless you both.”
