Having a baby in 2020 is even more stressful than it is during normal times — the coronavirus pandemic has made sure of that. But amid worries about social distancing, keeping healthy, and giving birth, one woman is concerned that the baby name she loves is going to seem strange after the pandemic is over. Should she stick to her guns or is this a case of the perfect baby name at the wrong time?
To be fair, the mom- and dad-to-be came up with this name way back in September 2017.
As she explained in a post on Mumsnet, she’s been trying to get pregnant for a long time “and knew this would be our girl name when we eventually fell pregnant.”
They recently found out that they’re having a baby girl — and the mom-to-be is due soon.
The name that they love for their baby girl is Cove — but in light of the current pandemic, is it too close to "COVID" she wondered.
“Especially since she will be born during the pandemic,” she wrote.
She’s not worried about people liking her baby name.
The real question is will her daughter get teased because of "its association with Covid.”
Unfortunately, many people agreed that the name is too close to COVID-19 for comfort.
"On the one hand, you should choose a name you like. On the other, and I'm being honest since you asked, if I heard of a child called Cove born in 2020 or during the pandemic, I'd think the parents were trying and failing to be funny and that it was a bad call," one commenter advised.
"Lovely name, but I agree it’s too close to COVID to use now," someone else agreed.
"I would absolutely avoid that at the moment. Perhaps save it for your next baby if you plan to have another," a third person chimed in.
On the other hand, some people straight-up thought the name was bad.
"Sorry OP that’s an awful name, even without the COVID association, but given the timing it’s almost cruel," someone commented. "Why would you saddle your kid with that at birth?"
"I immediately thought of the dodgy 'geezer' meaning, rather than the geographical meaning. Even without the COVID element I’d steer clear of it as a name for either sex," another person added.
A third person put it this way: "COVID has done your child a favour, it seems…"
Obviously we're not one to pass judgement on another person's baby name, but if the mom is really worried that people will associate the name with the coronavirus, maybe she should use Cove as a middle name. Or hold off for now until there isn't such a strong connection between the two.
