TikToker Makes a Case on Why Parents Need To Cool It With ‘Unique’ Baby Names

For some people, the line between a unique baby name and a strange baby name is very thin, but one woman on TikTok is taking parents to task for trying too hard to be different. Amber S. calls herself the Name Fairy online and regularly shares her thoughts on baby names on her page. But the TikToker sparked a debate after sharing the one popular name that she thinks parents have taken way too far.

Amber didn’t hold back in a recent video last week.

While lip-syncing to the song “Talk Dirty” by Jason Derulo, Amber explained one of her biggest baby name pet peeves.

“The number of interesting ways to spell the name Jackson,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. “Jaxon, Jacksyn, Jaxsyn, Jaxyn,” she listed.

“‘Unique’ name spellings can get outta hand real quick IMO!” she added in the caption.

The video has been watched more than 17,000 times, and people agreed: Baby names have gotten way out of hand.

"Pretty soon Jackson is gonna be the weird way to spell it," one commenter joked.

"And the number of ways to spell Mackenzie," another commenter pointed out.

"Lol… gotta laugh cause my boy's name is Jaksen," a third commenter wrote.

Other people thought Amber was being too judgy.

"My son's birth mom chose it. Spelled Jaxson. I don't let anyone disrespect it because that's a special connection for them," one commenter told her.

"Please do not judge some strange spellings," another commenter pleaded. "This could be due to immigrants spelling their names phonetically from their native language.i.e. Viktoriya Or Tatiyana/Mariya, etc. They do not know the American spelling versions. (from Slavic girl with many strange family spelling names)."

Still others shared other unusual baby names they've heard.

"M’rald. Their name is emerald," one commenter wrote.

"Abcde (pronounced Ab-City)," someone else shared.

"Someone spelt Jason like Jayceon, like what," another commenter added.

Of course, judging someone's baby name is sort of terrible and we all know what they say about opinions, right?
