There are a lot of precious places on the internet, but few things compare to the Weird Secondhand Finds Facebook group. Scrolling through it has become one of my favorite activities these days, because strangers sharing things they found in thrift and antique stores is wholesome joy.
Now people in the group are sharing the ultimate secondhand finds — photos of the bizarre vintage bathrooms in their apartments or homes. There's deep Roman bathtubs. There are cat wall mosaics. There's bright green tile that feels like the bathroom from The Shining. And so, so much unnecessary carpeting. Here are the best ones.
Hey, blue...
*Extreme Jeffree Star voice* Hi, blue bathroom, hello! How are ya?! The late 1960s came and left an inedible mark on this bathroom, which features a soothing blue color scheme. We have textured wallpaper. We have blue appliances. And most of all, we have the zaniest blue tiles I have ever seen.
Every Leo wants this bathroom.
For the vainest among us (shoutout to my fellow Leos), you can see all of your angles while you get glammed up in this mirrored bathroom. The owner, who lives in Little Rock, Arkansas, wrote that they live in a high-rise apartment building that were "luxury condos in the ’60s and ’70s." Excuse me while I move to Arkansas.
Versailles in your own home? Why not!
Why poop in boring white tile when you can do your business in the Palace of Versailles? Let me just say, I am obsessed, OBSESSED, with this completely extra bathroom. The user didn't provide any backstory — and I'm no design nerd — but this is screaming late ’70s to me in the best possible way. Make way for the royal bum.
BATHROOM BRUTALISM.
Brutalism may be a controversial mid-century design trend, but personally, I love this bathroom that feels like you're bathing inside a suburban strip mall. I mean, sure, this bathroom takes itself way too seriously, but those strip mirrors provide a bit of carnival funhouse vibes.
This bathroom is mauve-olous.
Mauve had a major moment in the ’70s. In what other decade could you find a mauve bathtub and matching gradient tile? The toilet is just the icing on the cake. The owners wrote that the mauve bathroom is "accompanied by an adjoining room with mauve carpet and mauve built-in drawers," which sounds equally mauve-olous.
Stay weird, 1970s.
The 1970s were such a strange time for design. The decade's style sense tended toward the most, and this bathroom is a prime example of runaway ’70s weirdness. The wallpaper is totally fly, but why is the sink a hideous shade of chocolate brown?
This early-aughts gem.
The early aughts were a lot of things, but stylish? Maybe not so much. This glorious 2000s bathroom features beige, and lots of it, along with carpeted siding and a shower stall that feels like getting sent to the Chokey.
"She's a very freaky woman..."
People loved getting down and dirty in the ’70s. Sex, drugs, and disco defined the decade, and this bathroom pays homage to all of those things. That shower stall door is truly something, as is the yellow wallpaper. The owner explained, "Our house was built in 1957, and renovated in 1970, not sure what all was original. We bought it in 2017," adding that they "refuse to change the bathrooms." If that door could talk, what would she say?
Carpeting, why?!
The owner of this house states that it was built in 1955, which apparently was a great year for pink bathrooms. Back then, carpeted bathrooms were all the rage, though it wouldn't take long for families to figure out the impracticality of such a trend.
I have no words...
… Because all I want to do is burst out in song from The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews is conspicuously missing from that mural. But this bathroom is charming, and I love the thought that went into creating a place that's a blissful pastoral getaway — right from your step-in jacuzzi tub and maroon carpet.
