King Charles & Camilla Make Surprise Appearance on ‘American Idol’ During Coronation

Talk about a busy weekend! Not only did the newly minted King Charles and Queen Camilla kick things off by hosting a massive (and historic) coronation ceremony, but they wrapped up the jam-packed two-day affair by making a special American Idol appearance.

Katy Perry and Lionel Richie were in town for the event.

The two American Idol judges had flown into the UK to perform during Sunday's Coronation Concert. But being there in person for the star-studded event did end up keeping them from their hosting duties, since the live Idol filming was set to happen in Los Angeles while they were still in London celebrating with the royals.

That didn't stop the hosts from virtually appearing on the TV show.

The duo was filming at Windsor Castle when their broadcast was interrupted by the newly crowned king and queen as they jokingly popped in to ask how much longer Katy and Lionel would be using the room.

The foursome then talked about the performances during the concert and the ongoing party that was taking place just next door to where they were all filming.

Those in the 'Idol' audience loved a chance to see the surprise guests.

You could barely hear what Charles and Camilla had to say over the cheers from the audience. That probably had as much to do with how excited everyone was to get a glimpse of the royals as it did to do with the fact that it was around 1 a.m. in the UK.

Coming off a long weekend like that, we have to imagine Charles and Camilla were wiped out!

Not everyone was a fan, though.

The royal drop-in was widely panned online. People took to Twitter to share their disgust, with people calling it "pathetic," "desperate," and "embarrassing."

Harsh!

And it wasn't just casual fans who had something to say about it, either. Shock jock Howard Stern blasted the royal couple, calling their appearance tacky. "It just sends the wrong message," he said.

What a way to end such a big weekend.

Hopefully, the newly crowned monarch was able to sneak away from the American Idol broadcast and get to bed. With so many events over the weekend, we have to imagine he was in desperate need of a good night's sleep.

Then again, with all of that excitement, he may have just been too hyped up for that. Hopefully he and Camilla at least got a chance to sleep in on Monday!
