Harrison Ford Admits That His Success Kept Him From Being a Better Parent

While there are plenty of reasons to be envious of Harrison Ford's amazing film career, it seems like the actor has a few very big regrets. The 80-year-old says that all of the success he experienced in Hollywood kept him from being the best parent he could be, and now he's ready to own up to what that means for his family.

Harrison shared his thoughts as part of a cover story for Esquire.

The Indiana Jones star got shockingly candid in the interview, admitting that if he'd been "less successful" in his career he'd "probably be a better parent."

"Certainly the more constant gardener is the better parent," he elaborated. "I've been out of town, up my own a–, for most of my life."

He even admits to feeling like some of the roles that have kept him from his family have been quite autobiographical in nature.

Even some of Harrison's current exploits seem to mirror his reality.

Harrison described how his recent role in a new series had him asking questions about his own parenting style.

"But I've got a daughter in Shrinking whose mother said I had spent all my time working, and then when the daughter says she's going to split for the East Coast, my character says, 'Well, I've got responsibilities here. I have a life!' And I don't go with her," he recalled.

"That's the s— that happens, and somewhere there's a reference in my life and I think, 'Are they stealing, f—ing, my life here?' But you discover that you've had these experiences, but someone else has, too."

That may be enough to motivate some people to talk to a therapist, but not Harrison.

The Indiana Jones star may admit to having some major flaws when it comes to being there for his children (and his complicated feelings surrounding that fact) but that doesn't mean he's ready to talk to anyone about it.

Harrison says that his wife Calista Flockhart gives him a hard time because he doesn't want to talk to a therapist, instead saying that he has already made enough progress because he can "accommodate all of the flaws that people go to psychiatrists to accommodate, because I accept my flaws."

Harrison is a dad to five children.

All of Harrison's children are grown, including 55-year-old Benjamin and 54-year-old Willard, who he shares with his ex-wife Mary Marquardt.

He also shares 35-year-old Malcolm and 32-year-old Georgie with his former partner Melissa Mathison.

Most recently, the Star Wars star adopted Calista's now 22-year-old son Liam after he and the Ally McBeal alum tied the knot in 2010.

It sounds like Harrison is comfortable with his lot in life.

He may have missed some things during his children's early years while he was building a career, but it doesn't sound like he would change much about his life so far.

Hopefully he and his kids have come to terms with how their lives panned out. Otherwise, we suspect Harrison will be in for quite a few awkward Father's Day phone calls after this recent interview revelation.
