We all know that fall is the season for rejoicing in the end of 100-degree days, loving pumpkin-flavored lattes (and everything else, apparently), wearing cute flannels, and getting all kinds of cozy. It is ALSO the start of the spooky season! For some of us, who might not love being scared, this means we've got all the fun of stealing our kid's Halloween candy to look forward to. It's called the mom tax, kids, and everyone has to pay it sometime.
But for fans of being scared, we've got good news. A whole crop of scary movies is coming to big screens and streaming services this fall, which means it is time to pop some popcorn, grab a cozy blanket, and brace for some jump scares! Please note: We are not responsible for any increases in light bills for anyone who needs to sleep with the lights on after seeing this spooky, gory, and scary list.

'The Nun II'
We might not have gone to Catholic school, but we've heard rumors that nuns can be a little scary sometimes. The upcoming sequel The Nun II will NOT dispel that particular rumor! This creepy movie hit theaters on September 8 and might be the perfect way to start scary movie season.
'A Haunting in Venice'
Even people who aren't usually into scary movies might be tempted to see A Haunting in Venice, which came out September 15. This story, about iconic Agatha Christie character Hercule Poirot, has an AMAZING cast. Come for the Tina Fey and stay for the Michelle Yeoh.
'American Horror Story: Delicate'
OK, this is cheating a little bit because it's a TV show and not a movie, but fans of scary things are going to want to check out the latest installment of the American Horror Story series. We might also tune in on September 20 to find out if Kim Kardashian. can actually act! That alone could be scary.
'The Exorcist: Believer'
Is there any scary movie more iconic than The Exorcist? We'd argue that the original 1973 movie has to be on every top 10 list of memorable horror movies, and we'll be curious to see if this new chapter in the series can compare. Fans can decide for themselves when it opens October 6.

'Five Nights at Freddy's'
Some of us might have learned about the existence of the Five Nights at Freddy's universe from our kids, but that doesn't mean we think the movie version looks super kid friendly! This jump scare-filled flick will start scaring us in late October.
'Saw X'
Whoa, how did we miss that there were already NINE Saw movies?! The 10th installment of this gory series will come out on September 29, so it could be an option for a very creepy double feature for folks who are also watching Five Nights at Freddy's that night.
'Thanksgiving'
We all know the holidays can be scary, and the Grindhouse movie Thanksgiving is taking that very literally! This one is likely to be bloody and gross, which is exactly what some scary movie fans are hoping for. This one comes out November 17.
'Satanic Hispanics'
Satanic Hispanics, which came out September 14, is actually a series of five interconnected short films from some of the biggest Latino directors working today. We're curious to see how all the films come together and which one might be the spookiest.
'It Lives Inside'
Selling points for the It Lives Inside movie include that it centers on a coming-of-age story (we always love those) with a strong female lead and is from the producers that made the classic creepy movie Get Out. This flick also comes out in September.
'No One Will Save You'
Anyone looking for a scary movie but wanting to stay cozy at home and eat their own snacks should check out the sci-fi horror flick No One Will Save You. It stars Kaitlyn Dever as a homeowner facing invading aliens and starts streaming on Hulu on September 22.
'Totally Killer'
Another streaming option drops on Amazon Prime on October 6. Totally Killer stars Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper from Mad Men is all grown up now!) as a time traveler sent back in time to try to stop a serial killer. Though it is billed as a comedy horror, we suspect there will be plenty of gory moments for those who like the scares more than the jokes.
'Malibu Horror Story'
People who liked the faux found footage scares of the The Blair Witch Project might be very into the new flick Malibu Horror Story, which also centers on the found footage of a scary event trope. This one opens on October 20.
'V/H/S/85'
Fans of found footage and retro horror vibes might be into checking out the series V/H/S/85, which is about a group of people who stumble across a collection of VHS tapes (there is the retro element!) that contain a series of horrifying recordings. Bad things ensue. It's due to be released October 6.
'Pet Sematary: Bloodlines'
Another fall movie that has ties to a classic scary story is Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. This movie, which comes out on Paramount+ on October 6, is a prequel to the Stephen King 1983 classic Pet Sematary. This one might not be the best for pet lovers, we suspect!
'Reptile'
Looking for something more scary tense than gory? The Netflix film Reptile might be the ticket. This thriller, which will be shown in some theaters September 22, starts streaming on Netflix on September 29. It stars the always compelling Benicio Del Toro and an almost unrecognizable Justin Timberlake. We're into it!
