Some in-laws are overt nightmares. They cross our boundaries, they infiltrate our nuclear family moments, and they sling useless bits of commentary and advice our way. All of that pales in comparison to when they are downright heartless and ask hurtful things of their child’s partner without a thought to the damage they’re doing.
One mom on Reddit wondered if she was “overreacting” to a “simple” request by her father in law. He asked her if she’d give her child a paternity test to prove he was the grandfather. He then told her “not to take it personally.”

“He said he doesn’t really know me, and to not take it the wrong way,” she began her post. He also said “That he would want me to take a paternity test to prove the legitimacy of my kids paternity to his son.”
She began explaining that she and her partner ended up moving fairly fast, so she understood a bit where he was coming from. The FIL, however, went behind his son’s back to make the request.
Redditors assured the mom she was “under-reacting.”
“It’s disgusting of him to accuse you of cheating on your partner and passing off someone else’s child as his own. How little he must think of you. What a vile man,” wrote one reader.
“I think that’s so insulting. I wouldn’t want to talk to him again after that,” someone else commented. “He is assuming you cheated on your man. That doesn’t sit right with me.”
Luckily, the original poster acknowledged in the thread that her husband was extremely upset his father did this.
“He said it’s offensive and that he was a coward for saying this behind his back,” the OP shared.
The thread indicated that the mom was going to go full no-contact with him and commenters were thrilled to hear that.
“I’d hand good old grandpa the results and say this now concludes our relationship with you,” advised one reader. “‘Me and my children are no longer a part of your life. Buh bye.'”
