Making a speech in front of King Charles (and more than 100 invited guests) at a dinner at Windsor Castle has to be a bit intimidating, but president Donald Trump has never been shy about speaking his mind — even if he appeared to take a dig at one of the king’s sons in the process. One quip that Trump made in his speech at Wednesday’s state dinner appeared to be a snub at Prince Harry … is that really the best idea while speaking at a dinner he was invited to by Harry’s father?
It wasn’t that Trump mentioned Harry, it was that he didn’t.
While speaking at the dinner, Trump showered praise down on Prince William, who he also spent time with during his state visit to the UK, mentioning that Charles has a “remarkable son” — not sons, plural.
“I just want to say that His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son in His Royal Highness, Prince of Wales,” Trump said. “Really amazing. We’ve gotten to know you and I think you’re going to have unbelievable success in the future.”
One royal expert believes that remark may have stung a bit.
While speaking to Express, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said that though nobody was expecting Trump to have a reason to bring Prince Harry up in his speech, the fact that he was very pointedly not mentioned might not have been easy for the Duke of Sussex to hear.
“Under the circumstances, Harry would not have expected a mention, but the clear implication here was that the King only has one son and certainly only one who was remarkable. Harry must be feeling the pangs of exile,” Richard said.
Trump’s opinion of Harry has never been favorable.
After Trump took office in January, he told The New York Post that he wasn’t planning on deporting Prince Harry from the United States … but not because he liked him. Instead, it was because he felt sorry he had to deal with wife Meghan Markle.
“I don’t want to do that,” he said. “I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
At the time, he also praised William, calling him a “great young man.”
Charles and Harry seem to be on better terms these days.
Last week, Charles and Harry met in person for the first time in more than a year, having a private tea for about an hour at Charles’ home, Clarence House.
Fingers crossed this means these two are on the way to reconciliation … and if that’s the case, there’s a good chance Charles wasn’t all that impressed that Trump snubbed him.
