A North Carolina mom is facing charges after encouraging her child to start trouble. Amanda Nicole Sherrill allegedly took her teenager to the home of another teen to start a fight. And then, she allegedly got involved herself. Police haven’t shared any information about why Sherrill encouraged her teen to do such a thing. As a parent, it’s hard when your child has a conflict with another kid. Even though it might feel really good to let them start a physical altercation with the other child, we can’t always act on that impulse. Those decisions have consequences, and it’s unknown what repercussions Sherrill ultimately will face.
Waynesville police were called to a home around 9 p.m. January 18, 2026, The Mountaineer reported. According to Waynesville Police Sgt. Matthew Cogburn, the call was related to a “civil disturbance.”
Sherrill allegedly took her 13-year-old child to the home of a 14-year-old child with the intention of starting a fight. Police are investigating the incident but have yet to find out a motive for the fight. Because it’s an active case, police weren’t offering the outlet many details.
The arrest warrant filed states that the two juveniles did fight. Sherrill allegedly participated “by punching the other child in the head,” The Mountaineer reported.

By the time police arrived, both Sherrill and her child had left. “None of the people involved were on scene when officers arrived,” Cogburn shared.
Charges against Amanda Sherrill were filed on January 19: three misdemeanor charges of simple assault, child abuse, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Sherrill was arrested on January 22. On January 23, she posted her $2,500 bond and was released from the Haywood County Detention Center, The Mountaineer reported. There has been no report of any pending court appearances. Shortly after Sherrill posted bond, Waynesville declared a state of emergency because of weather. This could affect any court hearings.
