Josh Duggar Hires R. Kelly’s Lawyer Despite the Fact That He Also Claims He’s Broke

Despite the fact that Josh Duggar‘s attempts to get out of prison early have failed at every turn, he’s not giving up just yet. Less than a year ago, Josh requested a court appointed lawyer, claiming that he had run out of the funds necessary to hire one himself… but now, he’s retained new counsel: the lawyer who once represented R. Kelly, ahead of his next hearing.

Josh’s new lawyer filed a notice with the court.

According to a report from the Ashley’s Reality Roundup, Josh’s new lawyer, Beau Brindley, who once worked as a defense attorney on R. Kelly’s case, was only recently hired. Beau filed with the court on Tuesday to let the judge know that he would now be representing Josh, which had to be pretty timely, considering that the former reality star was set to appear this week.

Beau also had to ask for special permission to represent Josh in this case, since he’s licensed to practice in Illinois but not in Arkansas, Josh’s home state and the place where his hearing would be taking place.

For now, his next hearing has been delayed.

Originally, the hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, but now that Josh has new counsel, it’s been delayed, though it’s not clear when it will be rescheduled for just yet. During his court appearance, Josh was supposed to address an issue involving a motion he filed for a new trial that the court previously determined hadn’t been mailed to the correct place by the deadline.

When Beau filed with the court, he also requested “additional time to review the case materials and familiarize himself with the issues” since he’s new to the case.

Just months ago, Josh claimed he was down to his last 22 cents.

Last year, Josh filed legal paperwork claiming that his family had stopped sending him money and he had less than $1 in his prison bank account with no other financial assets to speak of, so he was requesting that he be granted a court appointed lawyer.

In June 2025, his request was denied, when U.S. Magistrate Judge Christy Comstock responded by saying that his motion “lacked sufficient detail” and didn’t show that he was truly in need of an attorney provided by the court.

No word on what changed that suddenly means Josh can afford a lawyer with a high profile celebrity case on his resumé, but clearly, that money had to come from somewhere. Is Anna’s dog breeding business doing that well?!
