3 Toddlers Were Found Wandering Outside a Motel Alone After Parents Allegedly Locked Them Out To Do Drugs

Drug-addicted adults cannot be totally attentive parents and feed their habit at the same time. Even if they try their hardest, getting high takes priority for many drug users, and their children suffer the consequences. We hear so many sad stories about children left to fend for themselves while their mom or dad is using. They never get any easier to understand. Police in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, arrested a couple on March 22, 2026, after they found three young children wandering near a motel alone. Opal Pearce, 33, and Christopher Whatley, 34, evidently chose drugs over parenting.

Pearce and Whatley allegedly locked the kids out.

According to the Laurel Leader-Call, staff at the Budget Inn on Ellisville Boulevard in Laurel saw three toddlers walking alone outside the motel. Staff contacted police, who arrived a short time later. They located a 4-year-old and 2-year-old twins outside the adults’ room in the dark. Sadly, the part of town where police found the kids is considered unsavory and poses serious dangers to young children.

Police said the kids were allegedly left unattended for a long period.

Laurel Police Department Sergeant Macon Davis told the Laurel Leader-Call that officers noticed something off when they spoke to the parents.

“It appears that Pearce and Whatley were under the influence of some type of drug,” Davis said. “I understand there was some amount of drugs found in the room. The children were found outside, and they were locked out of the hotel room. They were left outside for quite some time. This is late at night, in a high-crime area.”

The couple’s mugshots seem to tell a sad story.

Pearce appears to be crying, and Whatley looks dazed in the photos posted March 24 to the Pine Belt News Facebook page. Both adults face child abuse, possession of drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia charges. A judge set their bond at $15,000 each. The comment section did not appreciate the couple’s bond and doesn’t want them out of jail.

“Bond should have been more. Shame on who ever just gave these people a pop on their hand. Bond should be way more for what they did to those babies and then some type of help for them,” someone wrote.

“wtf I would hate to see any child took from there parents. But I pray to god they took these kids and put them some where safe ! Shouldn’t of been a bond this is messed up,” another person agreed.

Someone else has a loved one in jail with a much higher bond and could not find the logic in this case.

“They be dropping the ball on alot of these charges for folks but yet mines sitting in there rn on $160,000 non violent, Drug related, first offense charges not involved with any children smh don’t make a lick of sense,” the person wrote. “But I will be the first to say he was in the wrong for what he did and definitely needed a lil bit of jail time to wake up and realize his mistakes.”

Pearce and Whatley are lucky the motel employees cared enough for their kids to keep them safe while they apparently chose drugs. Life’s too short to waste on drugs and sitting in jail, but that’s their choice. Those little babies didn’t have any choice and deserve so much better.
